Sold at auction to on line bidder for $27,500. Someone is going to be very unhappy. Wonder if buyer has any recourse once he finds out what he bought. Like I said before car is presently running fine. And at $27,500 I would have to guess that buyer is not a re-seller that's close to full retail

As long as he stays off these forums, he maybe in ignorant bliss for awhile. That "awhile" is the million dollar question on exactly how long this motor can run without any major symptoms popping up. If he only drives it a few miles every weekend, it could last a long time.

Short of a rebuild what would be the new owners best bet? New IMS, drop oil pan, oil changes every week or maybe just keep putting in a new filter and hope for the best?

There's been more than a handful of members here IIRC that's found particles in their oil filter and their motors are still running strong now.
Anywho, if the buyer is a dealer, they can just unload it on an unsuspecting consumer if they find out the motor is toast. This may be the sad reality unfortunately.

Don't know if it was ferrous or not. Originally their plan was to just do an oil change and sell it themselves. They saw LOTS of metallic bits on filter and assumed the worst. They put it up for auction and sold it today.

Ugh. Obviously not honestly marketed if it sold that high ![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Hopefully (for the new owner) Alp is right, but I think "metal in the oil" is more often than not a very bad thing...

Actually, it sold for $26,300:
2004 PORSCHE 911 AWD CARRERA 4 BLUE 2 6 GAS 6 AWD Y CD CV L 53,521 $26,300
I am going to bookmark this thread in case I ever get foolish enough to seriously consider bidding on a 911 at the auction. I've come close a couple of times, but chickened out.
Now, what we may all be missing is that whatever dealer bought the car can sell it to someone and offer an aftermarket warranty to the buyer. If the buyer gets the warranty, then it will be the warranty company that takes the hit.

This is very true and I can imagine with enough hits for engine rebuilds/replacement to the warranty industries for this car, some may wise up and have a prequalification stage as a prerequisite to getting a warranty on the car. It's unlikely but not impossible.
