BAD.TAG,
If you were to skive the edge in about 1/4" you could wrap the leather around the escutcheon to clean up the edges. Like Porsche does although they might also use thinner leather to begin with.

BAD.TAG: On a separate issue, referring to post #12 pic #2 I have read that keeping numerous keys on a ring with the Porsche key can have a detrimental effect on the life span of the ignition switch which many complain is suspect to begin with. I don't know, maybe others can chime in with real knowledge.

Stop by an upholstery shop they will have tons of scraps and will just give them to you.
