Maybe my ears suck or my standards are low, but the system in my car isn't all that bad. Sure it's not great, but could be a lot worse. Speakers are cheap, and that would be the last thing on my mind if/when buying one of these.

+1, my GT2 has the base 4 speaker system and it's not bad, dad's 6TT has the Bose and has more bass/depth but not really that much better overall.
Thinking about doing a classy HU and speaker upgrade in the GT2 to gain aux-in, and better speakers to add a little more depth; cheap and fully reversible.

It seems pretty unlikely that all of the speakers are blown out simultaneously...

If you're hearing anything at all from the speakers, they're working. Could be nothing worse than a loose wiring harness.

I'll look into it and my Bose system in my CTT isn't bad at all but no BT Etc. My goal is moving the AC controls for a double DIN apple car display and that's it. Maybe speakers, but more **** for thieves to eyeball. The exhaust will be my main thing to drool over as many people have already pointed out. The cat back Eisenmann I had in my M5 was to die for. I just wonder how the radio got so ****ed up? I do listen to NPR.

Ah - in that case, I advise purchasing a new head unit AND new speakers - preinstalled in a Prius for your convenience.

Use the balance/fader to test each speaker separately. If the issue is in all speakers, then the problem is most likely in the head unit or amp -- both are easy and cheap to replace buying replacements on eBay. It could be wiring also.

If it turns out to be the speakers, then it's also cheap. A popular option are to replace the four speakers (dash & rear) with Alpine SPS-410, which are about $50 a pair. The door speakers (woofers) are actually pretty good in my experience, so I wouldn't replace them unless they are bad.

You will get a sound upgrade replacing the speakers and modernization (bluetooth) upgrade when you replace the head unit, so it shouldn't be a big deal regardless of what is broken.

What year is the car?

2004. You couldn't pay me enough to drive a goddamn Prius POS. I'm gonna have a 996 for less than half the price of the FIRST Prius my brother bought and proclaimed himself a genius at 145/bbl oil.

Heh. If you don't want to pay for the Prius, I believe they will give you one as thanks for your NPR contribution of $25,000 or more.

996 drivers are saving the planet driving 15-year-old cars that are NOT stuffed full of rare earth minerals, cadmium, arsenic, and lithium...

Agree 100%. We own a chunk of a battery company that makes zinc silver batteries, maybe that's why he wants a car full of the things! Tired of electronic cars in general....ie NAV etc.

The heat in TX alone just murders electronic systems in cars....

Damn speaker bearings...

PS: OEM base level speakers are extremely mediocre quality paper cone foam surround all-range drivers.

This was my solution... Modified some Polk Audio plate speakers to mount on the factory grill mounts.

This is a good right out and a good value.

Plenty of good aftermarket options on speakers. I went with the JBL GTO line and installed myself, works well with the bose amp.

If you have snap, crackle and pop, more than likely the final amp has been overloaded and the power section is blown. I've seen lots of them like that. Once that goes, the speakers which are simple mechanical solenoids don't last long afterward. The head is prolly ok because it doesn't do any of the heavy lifting of the audio, just a tuner, CD player combo. Try swapping in some temp speakers and let it warm up well, then run it at modest volume for a bit and see if it pops. If so, the amp needs to go, and so do the speakers. If it doesn't keep popping with the temp speakers then you can get away with just that being replaced. Lots of options on amp and speakers, I won't give any advice there.
