MODification = installing non OE parts. LNE IMSB is a improvement over oe part.

So if you change the tires or the air in the tires, it's a mod? How about changing the oil?

LS swap is best bang for the buck on a n/a 996.

Less than that, got my boot for $30 on ebay when drinking, then another $5 or so for the Home Depot plug.

What helps too is taking out that extra resonator box deal in the airbox. That opens it up a bit more and does help to make the whole system more efficent.

To the OP and to the topic... Not going to mod the suspension yet, but looking to put in a lighter flywheel next summer along with a stage 1 clutch, then depending on money going to put in some open exhaust.

I've always thought that these cars are whatever you want to make of them and that living with those choices is more or less the price of admission of getting something setup how you wanted.

Do coilovers, even the cheap ones. Rubber top hats/mounts for a more OEM feel and solid tops for a firmer feel. You'll thank me later.

I have a daily driven 2002 996 C4S, owned for 4 years now
Some mods:

997 GT3 82mm throttle body
IPD 82mm Competition intake plenum
Fabspeed carbon dual snorkel intake
997 Tubi headers
Fabspeed 200 cell x-cats
Tubi mufflers
RSS engine mounts

Ohlins coilovers
OEM top mounts
Tarret GT3 sway bars
Tarret sway bar links
RSS rear dogbones

997 GT3RS short shift
some RUF goodies - shift ****, pedals, floor mats
upgraded stereo and speakers...
RSS rear toe steer arms
Turbo twist hollow spoke 18" wheels

I also diligently maintain the vehicle and keep up with any service requirements - i.e RMS, IMSB, ....

The vehicle has served me very well over the last 4 years as a daily driver, including in our harsh and cold winters, and puts a giant grin on my face every time I start it up and go for a drive

As long as you don't mind spending the $$$, why not modify/personalise
