why no glove compartment?

Ahh.... 'cause it doesn't?
Really though - It was a cost/supplier issue, and no one really "fought" for it until later (after lots of calls for it).
Interesting sidelight - until very recently (last two or three years), "interior" utility/usefulness was incredibly low on the list of priorities in design/development. Usually the interiors were/are "designed" to certain asthetics, then held to safety standards (loads on crash test dummies), without any real "utility" tests. I'm glad to see the trend towards better utility.

rbarna,
there are the compartments in the door on each side that pretty much double as glovebox replacements...but for us pre-MY02 owners, we're SOL, and just have to live with it...

I like the clean lines of the dash w/out the glovebox. You can add the Bird armrest for more storage space and a cupholder too (blasphemy I know).
I've since ripped out the tray under the steering column for a cleaner look.

Germans keep their gloves on, hence no need to store them.
Also, they don't put down their drinks while they're driving.
Porsche marketing finally did figure out the American market for MY02. Though some see it as another sell out from the purity of the racing heritage

I did the "Bird" too and it does add a nice increase in storage space. Additionally the lid is actually easier to open in its repositioned location. I installed the cup holder and have used it once all year. Neat contraption, in hindsight I could have done without.

Wow, I can't imagine being without a glove box and taking out the map holder underneath the steering wheel. Although you can't put a lot of junk in there, its still the perfect place for checkbook, wallet, and cell phone. All the small stuff then goes fine in the door pockets or center console.
