lol, I know right!? I did a ton of research but still wasn't sure if I needed the $100 or $380 one but I flipped a coin and correctly bought the $100 version.
When did Oz start requiring 3rd brake lights? I haven't been Down Under since the late '80s/early '90s and third brake lights were probably the last thing on my mind.

Haha, before my time probably! You should come back!

I was fortunate enough to get a genuine non 3rd brake light harness with a genuine AeroKit Cup II (GT3 MK2 style) spoiler

350USD to AUD is $500!!

After some further searching (although not 100%) it would seem my harness differs slightly as my 996 is the facelift 2002. I've yet to discover my strengths, but auto wiring certainly isn't one of them. I have the spoiler with brake light as per SoCal911t. I have contacted 911design as quoted by SoCal and they can't tell me if that harness will hook up my spoiler brake light or not - you'd think they'd know! As I've said its £350 from Porsche. I understand when wired correctly the brake light behind the spoiler (on the body) is inop allowing the brake light in the spoiler to operate? Obviously, all original lifter etc have been removed. Its become a real ballache

Okay - do you have the original harness? Are you averse to cutting and using the original harness? If the first answer is yes and the second is no, we can help.

The original harness has everything you need on it - if you don't have one get one from a breakers/wreckers/ebay. A few splices and remove a few wires or just leave them in there and you're done.

Yes, as pictured my original harness. I've no problem splicing wires at all if someone can help. I've seen so many different posts with conflicting ideas I was afraid I'd end up with a harness that would resemble a bad hair day.

Default Wiring

Let's start with the Bentley diagram for the 2002 spoiler:

You have already removed the spoiler drive motor wires and taped them off, so you have removed that from the circuit. Those are the YE/GN and BU/GN wires that terminate in black and red on your harness picture.

The wires you need to "fake out" on the early cars are the ones that go to the spoiler lifting switch (called the "Drive Spoiler" on the EWD).

Here is a post I wrote about it when I researched it previously: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post14516030

The 99 EWD for comparison has a much more complicated spoiler drive module (where you can tie three wires together in the harness to disable the spoiler warning and change brake light behavior):

It looks like all of this runs through the cluster on the 2002, rather than an analog circuit in the drive spoiler relay in the 99 EWD.

Which is a long way of saying that I wonder if you need to recode the brake behavior and warning light for the spoiler out (disable using PIWIS or Durametric) on your 2002.

There is also this $129 product which is supposed to disable the spoiler warning light, if that is the main issue. The owner of the company is a member here on Rennlist. MICROMODULE DEVICE™ PREVENTS SPOILER WARNINGS! For cars with a fixed wing. https://rennkit.com/purchase/#OptPurch

CDS72911, Indeed this is yet another alternative that has proven over and over to prevent the warning. Thanks for pointing it out!

Thank you for your reply. I'm beginning to think maybe I should just swallow the £350 for the harness upgrade, seemingly, its a plug-and-play without the need for coding

Strangely, when I disconnect the harness I don't get any spoiler alerts at all but no brake light either

FYI the spoiler can also be coded off with a PIWIS2/PIWIS3. So if you get your car serviced at the dealership they can program it for you without the need for any other products or cutting the harness.

Some independents should have a PIWIS2 - if you need the instructions let me know ill write them down for you.

Harness goes to fan, brake lite and spoiler drive.

So which wires do I need to work with Dan? I can eliminate the wiring for the fan, light & the spoiler power cable but I'm lost as to how I reconfigure the wiring to accommodate the spoiler brake light. Any help would be much appreciated

Well, I can't say if this will help, but...

Based on my reading of the EWD for the '99:
  • When the brake pedal is depressed BK/OR gets 12v+ which goes to a common point (8) and is distributed to all of the various brake lights to turn them on
  • What determines which brake light lights up is the one that is grounded
  • Pins 6 and 7 in connector X23 are the ground wires to the high mount brakes light and the brake light in the spoiler.
    • Pin 6 is the BR/BK wire - spoiler mounted brake light signal
    • Pin 7 is BR/OR wire - deck mounted brake light signal
    • They get grounded by the position of the relay, ultimately via pin 5
  • In the '99 EWD, which light gets grounded is all determined by switches (relays) inside the Drive Spoiler, it isn't shown how this occurs in the '02 EWD
  • Connector X75 in the lid harness goes to the high mount stop light - it has two wires BR/BK is ground, BK/OR is the brake signal (12v+ when brake light switch is activated/pedal depressed).
  • In the 2004 EWD, pin A8 is the 12+ signal wire from the brake switch
  • X75 gets grounded through pin 8 in X23 and pin 6 on the Drive Spoiler connector
  • The EWD for 2002 doesn't indicate what these wires do or where they go, but pins A6, A7 and A8 in connector X23 are shown dead ending in the diagram on sheet 2A

If the '02 is similar, this you should be able to fake it out using this information.

If you only want the spoiler mounted brake light to work, I think you'd want to make sure connector X75 pin 1 gets 12v+ signal from BK/OR when the brake pedal is depressed (via X23 pin 8), and pin 2 (the BR/BK wire) is grounded (however you prefer, but grounding by jumping it to pin 5, or it's corresponding brown wire, should do it).

You should be able to verify with a test light or multimeter.

Dan, would you be willing to share the instructions for a PIWIS2?
Customer has a GT3 wing on a regular 996, original harness, spoiler warning.
Many thanks!
