K&N Intake rubbing on pully - motor mounts need to be replaced?
First post!
So I just installed the K&N intake on my 02 996 which has 80k miles on it.
In 1st and 2nd gear under high load (4-5k rpm) the pully directly behind the heat shield grinds / rubs on the back of the heat shield. When driving but not under heavy load, no rubbing occurs.
See picture of the back of the heat shield here:

Since the grinding only occurs when the engine is under heavy load, I was thinking that the motor mounts need to be replaced. Thoughts on this?
I do have a good amount of vibration in the car when idling, and the left tailpipe is significantly lower than the right tail pipe. I've heard that these are signs of motor mounts needing to be replaced.
Any advice on whether or not this grinding could be caused by the motor mounts OR advice on what motor mounts are recommended would be appreciated!

^This^ may be true, but the uneven exhaust tips are a telltale sign of worn out motor mounts! Replace them first (it's a quick and easy job), then see if you need adjustment of the K&N

I had no rubbing, even before I replaced my saggy motor mounts. The K&N kit is very adjustable - just loosen everything up and get it repositioned before you snug everything back up.

I've pulled the kit out 3 times each time adjusting the L bracket that hooks to the hole I drilled in the hood latch so it moves the back of the heat shield away from the motor. Still grinding. The bottom 3 mounts on the heat shield that attach it to the body are also adjusted as far as possible back away from the motor.
When you guys say its very adjustable what do you mean? Most of the mounting points are pretty fixed in terms of allowing any sort of movement away from the motor.
The left tail pipe is lower than the right, and the left side of the motor is where the pully is that is grinding against the heat shield under load.

Thanks all! I'll replace the mounts and see if that changes anything. Looks like there are some aftermarket options available. My 996 is a C2 - can anyone make a suggestion as to what aftermarket mount works well or if I should go OEM? Thanks in advance.

It depends on your use of the car, if it's strictly street I would just use the factory replacement mounts, if it is tracked fairly heavily and or the suspension is modified I would go with the RS (or clubsport) 85 shore engine mounts, the Wevo and RSS semi-solid mounts are also good products, understand that any of these 3 latter options are going to transfer more noise and vibration to the cabin than the stock mounts, and provide a slightly harsher ride. if it's a DD or cruiser probably not worth it IMHO, if you are doing HPDE, autocross, etc. it might be worth a try

Ok - finally replaced the engine mounts. I used Torque semi solid mounts. The car feels a bit more stable around corners AND the intake stopped grinding! So it looks like my issue was engine mount related. Thanks for the help!

It's a Porsche 911 linage, even DD is like autocross.
