Default Dreaded rear view mirror failure!

So on my weekend trip the rearview mirror stopped working and leaked out whatever lcd fluid makes it work. So I need a new one.

Are there any that have auto dimming and are affordable and even better would easily fit in the mounts I have?

Or, since it's a cab, should I put a manual one in?

Go manual. It's cheaper and saves weight!

I didn't even know that auto-dimming was an option.

Yup, it was and I guess according to the build sheet I have auto dimming mirrors on the doors too.

=)

On the second part of my question though, will anything fit or are there specific ones or? I have the rain sensor too, so I can't replace the whole works.

Anyway, why do you need dimming? Don't you know your car takes a depreciation hit if you drive it at night?

I don't, but at this point the power is already going there and if there was an affordable dimming option I'd go with it.

It's a known problem. You can correct it through OBDII.

Oh yeah, forgot about the rain sensor option. We opted not to get that.

I don't know of generic auto-dimming mirrors, but I suppose they may exist...

I don't see why you couldn't switch to a old school mirror (generic or 996 specific), though as you'd still need to get wires to the rain sensor it may look a bit funny as the wires and sensor would be visible.

Aren't there any same era VW or Audi mirrors that would be a perfect, part-sharing fit?

It is pretty handy, I have to admit. Makes it hard to go back to using regular wipers with regular manual settings.

I'd call LN or Raby to see if they have a solution for this, but I don't know where I put my phone.

If you want it fixed: http://sybesmas.com/

Many BMW owners have this issue and send it there. What they do is replace the autodimming fluid with LCD type dimming so that it never has a chance to leak out again.

I'm not sure on the 996 mirror but I'm fairly positive they can also do that to it too.

I had an aftermarket auto-dimming mirror in my 996. It also had Homelink, which was nice. I bought it from www.radar-mirror.com.

The downside of aftermarket mirrors is that they don't have the bayonet-style mount that Porsche uses. A horseshoe adapter is required, and that works okay. It's not as stable as the OE mirror.

You might contact Scott at www.radar-mirror.com. I think they repair OE auto-dimming mirrors, and they can add Homelink to your existing mirror if you want it.

Good luck.

EDIT: I just checked their site. They will repair your factory auto-dimming mirror for $99.

It resets once the car is off, so the lever would need to be turned off/on again.

But yes, it is hard to adjust the frequency of the wipers when you're used to the car doing all the work for you.

I thought this was a joke thread at first as I had no idea the self-dimming mirrors actually had fluid in them.

Wow I guess I learn something new every day here.
