This is the buck converter I will be using. This is about 10 times more expensive than a linear regulator. The linear regular can do the same thing as this, but it's very inefficient. Our input is 12v and out output is 5v. With usb 2.0 spec, the max current drawn would be 500mA. 7v * 500mA = 3.5watts. On a part as small as a linear regulator, the regulator would reachs temps about 250*F+. With a buck converter, you be generating around 5% as much heat as that.

Just waiting for the bluetooth to come in the mail and I'll be able to finish testing on a bread board then soldering into the becker unit

Everything works and audio quality is good! All thats left to do is remove the head unit, find the nodes I will be solding the power and ground to, and removing the female aux on the bluetooth board and soldering jumpers between the becker board and bluetooth board.

Also taking pictures for a DIY guide once I finish installation.

Got everything soldered in and was able to pair my phone and play music via BT. I'll write a detailed guide if there's enough interest.

What you'll be soldering too.

Everything wrapped up in shrink wrap. I decided to ziptie everything down using the cassette player mounts. You do not want to mount these to the walls of the head unit.

You could probably do everything external to the radio. I have the Becker cable that plugs into the back of the radio in place of the CD Changer. The cable has audio and power so you could probably make your gizmo and just plug it in instead of soldering inside the radio. You'd just have to find pin-outs and find a suitable connector. Make a bunch and sell them.

I wanted to keep everything internal since I do not have a glove box. However, making these connect to the pin is very doable. I already know what pins I'll need to utilize. These pin connectors are standard, off the shell parts so making these would actually be quite easy.

I will re-write a more detailed and in depth guide. I'll also offer to do this service for a small fee and/or make an external unit.

An external unit would make it plug & play which is a great advantage to people who aren't as tech-savvy as you are. Would you be able to come up with a solution that plays mp3's on a thumb drive?

Would you mind sending me a picture or link of said charging cable? If the plug it replaces is only the blue one, I'm very dubious it actually charges your phone. You can trick iphones into thinking they're charging by placing resistors on the D+ and D- terminals, when in reality the supplied power is so low, it's not doing anything.

I'll see what it would take to get a usb to work. Getting an audio signal shouldn't be too dificult, but I think what will be difficult is navigating through your music. By using bluetooth, I can use my phone to do that part. I'm a mechanical engineer, not an electrical, so this not my area of expertise. Just a disclaimer. haha

Must be a very convincing illusion because the iPod I keep in the car has been tricked into thinking it's been charged for the last 4 years.

The reason I'm asking about a USB connection is that I put a Pioneer stereo that has bluetooth and USB in another car. I put all of my music on a tiny 32gb USB drive and leave it plugged in. It's so small it's not even noticeable. Anyway, it's always there and doesn't require syncing or charging. Very convenient. I never use the bluetooth to stream audio anymore, only for phone calls.

The problem is that the radio wouldn't look right in the Porsche.

Ah, it has the green plug as well, which has a ground and 12v+ supply.

If I can get a second cr220 to mess around with, I might be able to make it work. Navigating through your music library is going to be difficult though.

Found this. Not sure how it works regarding navigating thru the files or what info it displays.

I did this a year ago, no soldering or opening up required - I used:

Aux wire

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5mm-AUX-...item2c94e9f8b2

The same bluetooth adapter

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bluetooth-...item1c52081e29

And this for power:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-To-5V-...item56598b6456

connect to loom with snap connectors:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Red-Bl...item2eca3dae4d

No need to open the head unit or solder anything! You will lose the cd changer though.
  • Just pick up switched 12v and ground on the headunit wiring loom witht he snap connectors
  • Plug the bluetooth into the usb power supply
  • Plug the aux wire into the back of your head unit and the the other end into the bluetooth adapter
  • Enable the "aux" input in the menu
  • Play music over bluetooth!
