Do you have any connections to someone with access to the dealers' auctions (Manheim and Adesa)? You can run it through the auction and get a really good real-world value. If it doesn't meet your reserve, it costs you a $25 no-sale fee. If you do get what you want, you'll pay a seller's fee of about $250.
Right now, stuff is selling at auction for as much as you can get in a private party sale and sometimes more. Spring Car Buying Fever is still in the air and dealers struggle to keep inventory on their lots, so they will pay moee at auction this time of year.
That being said, they really look for cars under 80,000 miles. But still, not a bad way to test the waters. I have done this for friends. My stepdad did this with his car dealer buddy every time he bought a new vehicle and traded in the old one - the trade in value was what the car sold for at auction.

That's completely ridiculous; why would someone be a bad person for accepting an offer to buy their car for any reason? As always, if someone is offering to buy a car from another party, the onus is on them to understand what they're doing.
