Default Newbie Question

I just got a 1999 a bit ago and noticed the other day ( finally a warm day )
that as I walked in front of the car it felt like the fans were blowing out
the front? I am prolly lost but I thought the fans would suck the air thru
the radiators as when the car is in motion and not push against or are
they bi-directional and when the car is at rest they blow thru radiators
and out the front and when in motion assist in sucking air thru from the
front.?

Thanks, sorry if its a dumb question!

John

Maybe your fans are wired backwards
I can't imagine them blowing air out to the front unless they are spinning backwards. Normally they suck air from the front and push the air toward the rear of the car. You can feel the air if you place your hand on the ground about 1 foot in front of the front tires.

Don't know why and I haven't bothered to look into it as I know it is not the case, but when the fans are running and I hold my hand in front of the radiator duct it can feel a bit like the fans are blowing air the wrong way.

But I just move my hand around to where the fan air exits and then it is clear the fans are spinning in the right direction.

Be sure the radiator air duct rubber is positioned correctly. Sometimes when the bumper cover is removed and then installed again the rubber ducting ends up out of place. This might allow exhaust air from the radiator to travel around behind the ducting and exit out at the front of the duct.

I've had to shove/work the rubber ducting back into place now two times. It is best done when the car is hot after having been driven and then allowed to sit in the sun as this makes the rubber more pliable and one can work the rubber back to where it should be.

The alternative is to remove the bumper cover and reposition the ducting then install the bumper cover, but that's too much work.

Thanks guys I will check on the ducting and also put my hand around where the exit should be
and check there as well, more than likely just over worrying !

Thanks again,
John

thats correct it may feel like its blowing towards you but in fact your just feeling the air velocity and not what direction its heading! mine does the same.

If you just got the car, you might wanna do a search on here and check/clean your radiators just to be on the safe side as well. It shouldn't take more than a couple hours for a first timer and you'll have a peace of mind afterwards too.

Pictured above is nothing compared to how much crud I was carrying around after purchase.
A/C really works good now.

The fans definitely appear to blow "out". Drive on a dusty or grassy lot and you can clearly see it.

John...welcome. Make sure you check out the sticky thread at the top of the forum, "Things you didn't know about your 996". A fun read and invaluable info.
