Default I'm kind of sad my car just hit 40,000 miles.

It's still a great car, right? The mere fact that it's now in the 40,000 mile bracket doesn't necessarily mean that it's worth less, right?? I know this is such a silly thing to be sad about, and yet I can't help feeling a little sad that the odometer now starts with a "4."

I guess the good news is that now I can take it on long road trips without worry because the 50,000 mile mark is so far away!

Just think of how glad you will be to tick over 100,000 miles.
My truck is hovering just below 300K, Think I won't be doing the happy dance?

10+ year old car hits 40k miles and you are sad.

You may want to ease up on that driving, or you might hit 50k miles before this decade ends.

There's a 996 Turbo (S I think) around with over 400K miles on it. The owner within the last few months removed the engine to address some leaks and at the same time to refresh the engine to address wear he believed it had experienced.

He found no measurable wear wherever he checked.

Thus in the case of your car's engine I'd say at 40K miles the engine is just about broken in.

(BTW, while not "big" miles, at least compared to the Turbo I mentioned above, my 03 Turbo has over 131K miles and runs just fine, too.)

my 996 had over 100K when I got it!

I kinda hear you - I was a bit sad when my E39 M3 hit 80K miles - I purchased it 3 years ago with under 50K. But it's the same car it was then - runs and drives exactly the same, and only has a few additional scratches on it which are hardly noticeable. Besides I bought both of these cars to drive! I wonder if the M5 will ever catch the 996 - I kinda doubt it as the 911 has 20K more miles and I seem to be driving them pretty equal miles.

Its just now getting broken in!

My 2012 997 is sitting on 9930 as we speak. I think its time to trade that old hunk o' junk in for a newer model.

These feelings are why I will never own a low mile car again. I had an 83SC with only 58k on it a few years back and never wanted to drive.

NEVER AGAIN.

That is sad. As the ad sez: Time missed in the drivers seat of a Porsche can never be regained!

The bigger question is how did you manage to keep your trip odo the same as your car miles?

At some point, mileage on a car becomes a badge of honor rather than an embarrassment. Back in 1998, I had a 1985 MBZ 190E with 248,000 miles on it. It was a 5 speed, and it ran amazingly well and looked nearly new. Then some moron rear-ended me while talking on a cell phone and totaled it. I'd still be driving that car if that had not occurred just to see how many miles I could have put on it.
