Default 24 hours with my new 997 SSK.

It's a blast. Shifting is super close in a good way. First few times shifting felt unreal how close the gears were. Not just front to back, but side to side too. All 6 gears are canted on the left side of the shifter. if that makes sense. You really don't reach right for higher gears. It's going to take some practice, but it's very cool. 2nd to 3rd is proving a little tricky. If you're not careful, I could see hitting 1st by accident. I'm going to see if there is an adjustment for that.

I'd compare it to what I've read an S2000 is like - a lever or joy stick. And it has a very nice snick, snick, snick sound to it. It may be me, but it also feels like the shifting/clutch is smoother. Like it's all better timed.

Overall great mod. Very pleased. Highly recommended.

Which one did you go for? Was it the 997 SSK or the 997 GT3 SSK or are they the same?

I got the regular SSK. I think the GT3 shifter has steel bushings and a slightly longer shifter. I didn't want/need either.

No pics to show of the install. Might of bin a good idea, but plenty of DIY's out there. That's what I used.

I appreciate the reply adcampo, so the 997 SSK is a Porsche part or aftermarket vendor? Thanks, Ralph

As a previous owner of a 2003 S2000, I can say that, while the 997 shifter is a big step up from the stock 996 shifter, it's not as precise as the S2000. That's not a dig on the 997 unit. Rather, the S2000 is boasts one of the best shifting 6-speed transmissions of any car I've owned or driven, price point be damned.

Regardless, thanks for the review. The 997 SSK is one of the mods I have planned for my car. After reading your review, I'm looking forward to it even more.

I have the 997 factory SSK option in my 997. It's a nice improvement over the stock shifter that I had in my 996.

It's a Porsche OEM part. I think my wife got it from Suncoast $429. Not cheap, but worth it. From my research better than the aftermarket units.

I've done a bunch of mods to my car. All pretty much cosmetic. This is the most expensive one so far, but totally worth it. I grin with every gear change. Next up, I'm thinking of H&R Sport springs.

I've owned a few Hondas and I can imagine the S2000 being much more precise in a Japanese Honda way. Not a dig just a fact. The SSK is much more mechanical feeling. You feel the stick connected to the linkage connected to the tranny.

I've also heard that people switch to the 997 standard shifter. What advantage does that give?

I recall reading the standard 997 shifter improves the feel some, but not so much shortening the throws.

997 shifter is an improvement, slightly shorter and definitely more positive. 997 SSK is shorter shifts and more positive but also higher effort. 997.2 GT3 is the best that I've ever used, rifle bolt smooth, low effort, very positive shifts, not notchy. It's the closest Porsche that I've driven to a Honda shifter, which are VERY good.

There is about a ~15% reduction in throw movement compared to the 996/986 shifter. It doesn't sound much but it is noticeably slicker in action.
Porsche also include a plastic positioning piece which locks he shifter into the correct position while you are connecting up the cables - makes installation a breeze compared with some aftermarket shifters......

I am considering the 997 ssk or gt3 ssk. I currently have a 997 shifter in my 996tt and like it but want to tighten it up a little. I don't want the evoms feel though. My car came with it and i hated it, so replaced it with the 997.
