I have a 2001 996 with 40K miles. I get in, turn the wheels and back up and I feel like a clunk from the front end. It feels like I've actually driven over something. I took it to a shop that specializes in Porsches and they said everything looked fine but at some point they want to grease the upper ball joints or something along that line. What would cause the clunk and the feel I've driven over something?

What you are probably experiencing is the inner front tire scrubbing when you turn the steering wheel sharply.
When the wheel is turned sharply to near full lock the inner tire is not in full contact with the pavement and because the inner and outer tires follow different paths in a turn the inner tire having less traction/grip scrubs.
This is more likely to happen in cold weather and with tires that have some miles on them but even new warm tires can do this if the surface is not very grippy.
Happens to me all the time in underground parking lots and well as my pavement driveway in the damp mornings. Outside wheel "jumps" outwards a bit. Normal behavior. Easily replicated on slightly damp or less grippy surfaces!
