IMS retrofit on a 3-Chain car
I am about to get a few things done to my car, among all of them (Change oil/filter; replace coolant, water pump & thermostat; replace flywheel, replace RMS, replace AOS) is IMS retrofit. I will be borrowing the LN IMS replacement tool kit as well from another local PCA member. My car is 2004 so 3-chain engine. Looks like locking cams on both banks is recommended since unlike 5-chain cars it doesn't have that one chain that keeps both sides locked (as long as you lock one). I haven't got my hands on the tool kit yet but it looks like it only comes with one "porsche special tool" for locking cams. Just wondering what some of the members did that replaced the IMS on their 3-chain cars? I know some don't lock either just mark the position of the cams, make sure they don't move during the installation. Or should i just lock 1-3 bank since it seems like that's the one most likely to jump a tooth? Thanks!

No experience with retrofitting an IMSB upgrade, but my advice is to take no chances. Follow the instructions in the kit and if it calls for locking down the cams then lock down the cams so there is no chance of any timing change, a chain jumping a tooth, or a tensioner pushing a cam chain guide out of position, etc.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Thanks for chiming in Macster, maybe i worded it wrong, i am not retrofitting anything i am trying to install the IMS upgrade from LN engineering. Bently and Wayne at Pelican recommend locking cams in both banks (on 3-chain cars), but i noticed that the tool kit i borrowed from a fellow PCA member has only one cam lock. I just got off the phone with LN and they say locking bank 1-3 is sufficient, so that's what i will do.

You are installing an IMSB upgrade from LN. I would follow the instructions to the letter though I would first check the instructions that came with the kit are the most recent, and the best instructions.
If there is any ambiguity I'd get with LN Engineering and resolve this. I would be very reluctant to rely upon what someone managed to get away with.

Ya i'll lock the one LN recommends but take the little green caps off of the other one and mark the cam position to make sure it didn't jump during the install. I have read the instructions by all Bently, Pelican, LN, watched the videos, it's pretty clear what the steps are.

Hi Nedster,
Did it work out with locking only bank 1 ?
I got the same problem then yours.
May I can manage to lock one cam at bank 2.
Thanks in advance if this message reaches you 7 years after your post

Hmmmm, necro thread! I think the Nedster is WAY down the road by now 😉 I’ve been here since Oct 2014 and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen him comment.

I just did this a few months ago. I remember locking bank 1 with the long lock tool spanning both intake and exhaust cams. Bank 2 was locked using the single lock tool. Both chain tensioner were removed and the IMS bearing taken out.
