Poor man's 911?

Poor man's 911?
So, I was harassed by a group of guys at our local PCA event this last weekend for driving the poor man's 911. It really sucked. On top of that, 986's were running circles around me. What's up with that?
If this car is viewed as the poor man's 911 and it can't even keep up with a 986 in a corner, what did I buy?
I mean, seriously! The very first corner I hit, I get passed! What's the point of having power if the damn thing can't turn a corner?
How do you feel about your poor man's 911? Are you regretting your purchase?

1) Mock them for driving cars with lawnmower engines.
2) Brace yourself - this sounds mean, but it's not intended as such. You don't know how to drive your 911 properly. The 996 has more HP than the 986 Boxsters, but the approach for cornering is hugely different. Because the Boxster is so neutral, you can overcook every corner and get away with it. Do this in a 996, and you are either going to plow through the cones on the outside of the corner (understeer) or watch the tail end of your car go around every corner before the rest of it (oversteer).
Sorry that the PCA folks were douchey, but you can find d-bags anywhere, including PCA events.

In 1999, my "poor man's 911" was being hailed as the best driver's 911 ever made. It ain't a supercar, certainly, but it's a damn fine piece of engineering.
My only regret was selling my Boxster when I bought the 996 - I wish I had both "poor man's Porsches," as they are both outstanding cars.

You just need to learn the slow in fast out these cars require.
You will totally smoke any 986 and any non turbo air cooled those prissy guys are driving.

Hm. Krater, since this image was your first Rennlist post, I'm thinking the problem isn't necessarily with your PCA club. If you have such a dismal opinion of your car, why bother complaining?

My back tires are almost balled and I've had no trouble at all. You just have to remember to not hit the gas as you are entering the corner, just on the way out.

There's a video out there somewhere that compares a 996 C2 to a 986 Boxster S on the track. The 996 wins... I'm sure a thorough search would find that video here on rennlist somewhere.
I agree with Schnell... the issue is with the driver, not the car. Fortunately, this situation can be helped with some proper driving instruction and some practice!

I'll chime in here, even if it's just to stroke my own ego . . .
Last PCA Potomac Autocross of 2014, and maybe my sixth in the 996 after having autocrossed a Boxster for the last several years. I came in second out of ~70 entries. Lots of good drivers and good cars below me.

The car is basically stock. ROW M030 suspension. Dunlop Direzza Z2 tires (not R-comp).
So, I'm pretty pleased with myself and the car!
