M96 Engine mods diy
I am slowly rebuilding my M96 engine. It began to fail with rod knock .Caught it early enough to save it with a crankshaft restoration and one replacement rod.Phew -that was close!Engine was otherwise very clean inside and no significant wear after 90kmiles. I drive 'con brio' but no mad Tracking
I have access to machine tools and am interested in simple upgrades & parts to improve reliability/longevity but can't find a list of recommended mods. Can anyone suggest a link/source for such info for the M96?
So far I have:
Checked all dimensions vs.spec.
pinned the gears of the IMS
chamfered the oil holes on the crankshaft
balanced the crank, rods and pistons,DMF & clutch pressure plate
All ARP fasteners
DOF+new IMS
+2qt deep sump+baffle mods.
LN water pump/thermostat mod
LN spin on oil filter
I have read about half-moon cut-outs for the cylinder bores but can find no dimensions/specs.Perhaps that is an air-cooled only mod?
The oil pressure regulator spring seems a weak spot?Chamfer & polish the leading edge of the oil pressure piston ?
Is the oil pump drive really as weak as they say ? It looks strong enough but I 'll fit an upgrade anyway -easy to make.
Oil squirt grooves on the con rods?
Larger oil squirters in the crankshaft carrier? It would be easy to drill out larger to fit bigger ones.
Improve oil flow to the camshaft bearings? How?
Increased output/flow oil pump?
Is there an easy way to improve/upgrade the scavenge pumps?
Add shuffle pins ? Size/specs/number/locations? or is this just another air-cooled thing?
There must have been many other successes (& failures)) with simple mods that require time/care/skill but modest $ ? And I would love to learn about them.If someone would kindly point me in the right direction?
Thank you for any constructive suggestions.

I'm kind of giving this a bump for you, but some info as well.
There's been a couple of rebuild threads lately, I think you might want to PM them, I do believe one is rallydogracing. There was another thread a while ago and his name was longray or something like that.
Longray went from a 3.6 to a 3.8 I believe while rallydog just did a rebuild, don't know of any other mods.
You might could call LN engineering to see if they had any other recommendations.
Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the bump.
LOGRAY did a great write up of a Nickies project. An epic saga
Here is the link to Rallydogracing:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-required.html
His link is important because of the 'rebore' procedure and sourcing. With ovality such an issue ,it is a helpful study.
I am in California so can't flirt with an LS+Renegade alternative.
There is lots of info on this subject but it is scattered .I have done lots of searches to glean a few gems and will eventually post a list of links.
I was waiting for Raby's M96 the Definitive Guide but have given up waiting like many others seem to have done.Pity.
