Default Engine Conversion

Hey Everyone,
I have a 99 Cab and i was wondering if the turbo motor fits in? and if it does how hard/expensive is it to go from a NA to Turbo in the 996 cab?
Has anyone done this?

It's expensive. Just price a suitable Turbo engine. Be sitting down.

While the engine may fit (and it may not fit) there are the intercoolers. They have to receive a proper flow of air to remove the heat from the intake air. Fail to do this and the engine will detonate itself to pieces right in front of your eyes.

I have seen Turbo Cab engines out. The engine bay is a thing of beauty. The locate of all the lines, hoses, and such is so well thought out there is hardly any empty space.

If the car was not designed from the ground up for the Turbo engine I would be very surprised if the engine and all its various required plumping -- intake, et al -- would fit.

Somebody my have done this. I mean car owners do all sorts of crazy things. But oh the effort...

If you want a Turbo shop around. While they are not giving these cars away there are some nice examples to be had for not scary sums of money. Your Cab is worth something too.

About your Cab: Your Cab is a very nice car. Take a deep breath and get those good Cab vibes going for you.

If you still feel the urge to swap a Turbo engine into your Cab, close your eyes and picture yourself walking down the main street in town where you live tossing thousands of dollars in the air and walking on as people rush in to grab the money. Oh, and have someone smacking you on the head with a hammer every so often, too.

That's probably what a Turbo into a NA Cab swap will be like. Only worse.

+1
Wouldn't recommend it unless you've had extensive experience modifying modern cars with all of their electronics, and also experience with modern Porsche chassis. There are more electrical modules and sub-systems that would likely need to be changed than one would imagine.

You'd be much better off by looking into the VF Supercharger upgrade

There are at least two members that did this. Search and you will come across it.

Did a search and didn't find any 996 Turbo engine swaps in to a 996.

I found one discussion about swapping a 996 Turbo engine into I think a Cayman but it degenerated into a discussion about supercharging the stock Cayman engine.

I also got a number of hits about replacing the 996 engine (NA or in one case a Turbo engine because the engine was shot) with an American V8 (LS1 or LS?).

To the OP you can look into adding a supercharger to your existing engine. This is probably a bolt on job for the experienced DIY home auto mechanic.

You didn't look hard enough Mac.

Like I said, I know of at least 2 member here with it. I found one within a few min. I'm not gonna exert the effort to find the other one but it's out there.

I agree with the comments about adding a VF supercharger. That seems like a more economical solution that will provide similar performance. Obviously there's more to the turbo than just a more powerful engine - suspension, brakes, etc.

It would be interesting to see another conversion!

Tried searching for turbo into 911 swap but I guess I should have put in narrow body.

Anyhow, thanks for the link. I just did a quick read.

Owner indicates the engine is very well behaved. I haven't seen any details so I don't know what all was done to get the engine in.

I did catch this: "His receipts rack up to 57k". This refers to the the person who had this conversion done. The poster in the thread I take it picked up the car after the conversion, and got it for a pretty good price, around $30K if you read between the lines. (The original owner of the car who had the conversion done wanted the money out of the car to open a coffee shop in NY IIRC.)

To the OP he does name the shop: At Speed Motorsports; that did the conversion, so I'd start there.

OP says the car is AWD but I noticed in the pic of the car on the dyno the front tires were not on rollers. Somebody messed up or the cardan shaft was disconnected.

He listed 4 issues: The ABS pump from a Turbo was needed; the Turbo fuel pump and some fuel lines needed (wonder if the fuel cooler was used?); fan wiring for under the hood was used; Turbo motor mount brackets; and the Turbo instrument cluster.

It's doable but at a pretty high cost. $57K is not chump change. I dare say one could get a nice 996 Turbo for that money and have some left over.

Actually Pete95zhn is a member here too and posted in the thread I linked to. I realized this after the fact.
