Default Mystery Connector...

Hey all,

I found this connector when installing a new deck in my '99 C4 Coupe. Any ideas what it's for? EQ? Haven't traced it back anywhere, it was just hanging loose inside the console behind the storage tray. It's not from an amp, as that's hooked up to the head unit.

Thanks,

B

It's the power supply for a phone. I forget the exact pin out, but one is switched, one unswitched, one ground, etc. makes a great power source for accessories.

Hmm… time to break out my multimeter… not that the fuse box is that far away, but this is pretty handy.

Thanks!

When I cleared all the unwanted wires out from a rusted broken Radar Detector, I was left with the same connector. I use the switched part of that connector today for both my little cobra radar detector and my Garmin GPS. Both devices come on/off with the ignition. I have velcro on both devices. The Radar on top of the dash in the front window and the GPS next to the CD changer left of the gear stick. I answer the phone hands free via the Garmin. I told you all before. If I can find an easier softer way, I do. I have a $7 double coffee cup and garage opener combination which I slide down the left side of the passenger seat and the console. My cockpit works excellently and to my liking. I have not been done for speeding or have I spilled a drop of coffee.

Bingo. Just tapped that connector with dual cigarette lighter plugs to power my Garmin and Sirius radio.

Great find, and thanks again for the coding.

I tapped into the plug wires so both mine comes on with the ignition. Did you do the same? Kind of a 'God Send' connector as far as the radar detector. Before the discovery of that plug, after a very spirited drive, I realized that I had not plugged in the Detector until I arrived back in the garage. That stupid mistake will never happen again.

I connected a dual cigarette plug to the switched line. Runs my Sirius radio and Garmin GPS without having to cut wires and run off the fuse box. Great set up.
Now the only thing I need to turn OFF is my V1 hardwired to my map lights… I might have to look for a better alternative, but I use a blend mount and it's SO convenient up there.

That's the single most useful connector on a 996. Congratulations on the find. I'm currently running my radar detector, TPMS, and phone charger off that connector...

In case you're wondering, this is the kind of phone that connector was meant for. When I deleted the lower console, I actually found most of the guts for one of these relics - the original owner really had one of these Miami Vice antiques installed. I'm sure there are baggies of drugs in my car somewhere, but I haven't found them yet.

The other item in the console above the storage cubby is a 4-cassette tape organizer.

If you correctly installed the mobile phone using the radio's phone line in, the radio would automatically mute your Van Halen or Spandau Ballet cassette every time your drug dealer called, which was especially helpful.
