You will not find a better drink or cup holder
All this stuff about AC vents and "ultimate" cup holders is obsolete.
1. Remove the console lid and store it (future collectors of our fine cars will want to return it to stock. When stored in a museum drink holders will not be necessary.
2. Install the cup holder insert in the cavity from Suncoast part 411989
3. Buy a random console lid on ebay. Remove the leather and attachment on the inside. Use a hole saw to cut holes that match the insert.
4. Take the new console cover to an upholstery shop and have it padded and recovered.
5. Mount it back over the cavity and fasten with rubber cement so it can be removed for cleaning the insert (vs. some permanent glue or hardware.) Beverages will occasionally spill with aggressive driving. The console will no longer be hinged but the large holes will make anything you drop in easily accessible.
This accommodates all cups and glasses with the exception of stemware. In that case you will need to use a solo and add a little ice to keep the beverage from sloshing out.
It's not elevated like other console mods that make it awkward to reach or put your elbow on, you don't have to reach in the passenger footwell and beverages stay below eye level.
For those of you who think the engine noise fully satisfies the senses, live your life. For the rest of us that desire the full experience, the cool kids, this is it.

Nice idea. Did you have to do something to avoid the alarm beeping when locking the car?
#3
No I don't. Does your alarm go off if someone gets into the console? I don't typically lock it. There's nothing more valuable inside my car than replacing a slashed top from the crack head that just had to get in.

I didn't either. Like 90% of them my hinge was broken. I ordered the repair kit but never got around to putting it on. I just kept it locked all the time so it wouldn't move around.
At least it now it serves a very good purpose that was lacking on our vehicles.
Thanks for the compliments guys.

+ for creativity, but I wouldn't do it. First, I occasionally rest my arm on the lid (mine is recovered with leather and memory foam), second the drinks would be behind me and difficult to get at, third its ugly...LOL

Well, it's ugly in the next to last picture. Once it is covered in upholstery material (the last picture), I think it looks very custom and cool. I'll still stick with my dual Ultimate cupholders because 1) I already have them and 2) they are plug & play, but this is a very cool mod.

Is it sad that after 11 years of 996 ownership that I thought one of the best features of my 958 was that it had cup holders?
They still aren't great though and are in bad position for me, but they exist!

I'm not talking about someone going into your console. If it isn't closed properly, you'll hear a beep when you lock the car. I was asking how you got around that.
