KK if you'd like to gift me your oil filter wrench I'd be honored.

Phil,
I'm a bit of a numbers guy so in a way I can understand your quest. While I can't say I'd go through the hours and $$ needed for this, I would be curious to see the spreadsheet after you collect enough data.

You got it Adam, and thanks for your support.
Believe it or not, it's actually easier for me to do it vs. not.
I think I have a clean, easy process for disposal, which was always the hard part years ago. Not high tech (I wish), just a $4 container w/screw-on lid from waldo's, and/or any other disposable thing I come across.

Ok cool, yeah I did research that, and most people say they work fine, but occasionally not, to which Loren's reply is always "use the metal one."

You're not going to see very much in a 1,000 mile oil change interval. Unless you're already throwing tons of aluminum, copper and iron.

Buy your Blackstone kits in bulk of 6 to save a little coin.

Just my 2 cents: hopefully, engine crap does not show 1 mile after any 1000-mile interval oil is collected. Then it would have been 999 miles too late.

In all seriousness, I am curious why not do the checks at 500-mile intervals? 0r 750? 1500? And this line of questioning can go on forever. Bottomline: your car, your money, your choice. All the best.

agreed, def the metal one. they have (at least at an AZ by my house) a bin of the oil filter wrench heads and i just grabbed a few and took them out to the car to see which one fit. If you want, I can go look at mine and see what size it is if you dont have that info yet.

Yes please, I'd appreciate that. I think it's 14 flats, but not sure if it's 74 vs. 76 mm.

Lex has a good point that 1000 miles may not be enough time to collect anything significant in the oil. The downside of increasing the intervals would be a lack data points and/or time. Keeping the intervals the same might help eliminate some bias, but then again differing driving conditions could potentially override all of that, right?

If your car is a high risk 996 as you stated, spend the money to fix it vs oil changes and UOAs. Then you'll really sleep well at night.
