Can the new $30,000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII outrun the big-buck icons of German performance? To find out, we gathered a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, an Audi S4, a BMW M3 and an EVO in Southern California for a week of hard on-road driving and *****-out track testing. So, did the EVO eat Germany?
The C4S lap times were faster than the stock $30k EVO III they tested but the other EVOIII in the test that had $5k worth of mods did beat the C4S lap times. Which only proved its a better bang for the buck.

Times have changed. My neighbor's kid keeps telling me how he dreams of having a Nissan (Skyline GTR) over a Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche, etc. My first crush was back in '75, as a ten year old gushing over a print ad of the then new Turbo Carrera...You know, I still have a hard-on for one.
Guess what, the $4.99 wine at my loacl supermarket gave me the same buzz as the Dom Perignon, guess they are the same. The $30 dollar digital watch keeps good time like the Rolex, guess they are the same. Yeah the modded evo supposedly did well in a "ricer" magazine with a C4S, guess they are the same.
I was following this thread since it was posted, just chuckling to myself. Couldn't contain myself anymore.
Ever since I got the Porsche and joined chat rooms, there have always been threads like these, and I used to always come up to defend Porsche. Thing is, there has been and always will be cars that are faster and cheaper than a Porsche. Even during the 993 and earlier era, there was probably a modded Evo, a Z06, or a Cobra equivalent. I am sure a lot of the modded cars out there can "spank" my C4S. However, a Porsche is and always will be a Porsche. Let the Mitsubishis, Hondas, Toyotas, Benzes, Bimmers and what have you come out. I'll just drive along in my C4S, content and happy.
How do I achieve a good launch? I just mosey along and let the others blast off trying to master their insecurity against a Porsche .
Couldn't agree more man. My neighbor came by the other day and said "Did you hear? Sport Compact Car says you should have bought the EVO". I just smiled and said, yeah, that's probably what they would say. Out of curiousity I read the article while at the grocery store waiting in the checkout line from hell the other day. The authors admitted that they didn't know how to drive the C4S, it was unlike anything they had ever driven before, which probably account for their awful 0-60 times. Porsche advertises 0-62 as 5.1 seconds and we all know Porsche is conservative with its numbers. The authors would also say how well it handled although they couldn't get the hang of a car that responded so quickly, almost "too quick" for their testers. In the end while they admitted that the C4S still outperformed the stock EVO they went on about how they could throw $4-5K in mods on the EVO and beat the C4S, of course ignoring that I could throw a SC on the C4S for $5-6K and stomp the modified EVO. As someone said, there is always some car faster or cheaper than you so what does it really matter? Drive what you like and be happy. Some other car or some car magazine comparing themselves to a Porsche only indicates in what high regard Porsches are held.
After all, there is no substitute...
I had some kids in an Acura TL want to race me from a light tonight on the way home. I just smiled as they peeled out and let them go their merry way, well that was until officer friendly pulled them over down the street. Sometimes it pays to look at what other cars are stopped at the intersection with you before peeling out.
I just got out of a boxter loan car that does 60mph in 6.0 - when I got back into the 4s it felt like a twin turbo. No way does the 4s run 5.5. They were probably looking for the nitrus button during the run - and consequently missed the shift from 1st to 2nd. That is how they ran 5.5.
