Just returned from my annual summer trip to SW Montana from Colorado to spend a week where I grew up. Straight shot up I-25, then hang a left on I-90. Nice 830 mile drive, each way. Lots of nice, open places to really open the car up when the urge strikes you.

Anyway, on the trip back yesterday, I noticed that Wyoming had just changed the speed limit from 75 to 80 on most of my path the day before. Not much, but every little bit helps.

And you didn't post any pictures of your travels for the rest of us I wish it was 75 here, 70 is the highest I've seen. Sounds like everything went smoothly then?

We have toll road 130 with 85 mph, highest in the nation, here in Texas.

Wyoming's nice, but it ain't all open. I got pulled over on I-70 in the western part of the state. Managed to avoid a ticket thank goodness.

Just reminding those that don't travel that often in states with wide open spaces that one can still get a ticket if he's not very very careful, or very very lucky.

Haven't been on 130 yet, but I got to enjoy the 80mph limit on I-20 (or was it I-10?) in west Texas a few years ago. God, I love Texas!

That's between El Paso and Kerrville on I-10. You can usually get away with running at 85. Between Kerrville and Boerne it's 75.

Joint highest you mean. The I84 between Salt Lake City and Boise is 85 mph also. It's a mountain road to boot...

Normal traffic speed between Houston and San Antonio on I-10 is 80+mph
It is common for me to run up to 100+ for short bursts.

My friend and I drove through Wyoming on I-80 on our way to run the Pony Express in his car 10 years ago. As we were poking along between Cheyenne & Laramie, we were passed by a guy on a quad. Seriously. As luck would have it, we pulled in next to him at the gas station and I absolutely had to ask him how the heck he gets away with riding a quad on the highway. According to him, only lights and mirrors were required to plate the vehicle (I use that term loosely). On top of that, he just ran a higher than normal tire pressure. After explaining all this, he said with a smile that proudly displayed his remaining teeth, "Ain't Wyoming Great?".

Indeed it is.

Same around here. I had to laugh at my cousin that recently went to Germany and was bragging about how he went over a 100mph there. I told him he didn't need to go all the way there just to go that speed. lol

ECS Tuning - yes, everything went smoothly. The C4S ran perfectly, steady 185°F, not a single issue. An excellent road-trip car, except for trying to pack all of my girlfriend's crap in!

Macster - you are right, you do have to be careful and a little lucky, you can still get a ticket for sure. There are a lot of long straights where I feel I can see that there are no cops hiding, and so some higher speed blasts. It's always a gamble, but so far I've won and had a great time doing it.

Ck986 - I don't know that you can count on the 10mph rule anymore. I set my cruise control (when not playing) at 85, and passed cops without issue. That is true 85, had to calibrate my speedo with my GPS. It reads 3-4 mph fast, regardless of speed over 30. So 88 indicated is 84 or 85 actual.

Not in a Porsche, at least based on my experience. A few years back in my Turbo I left Amarillo heading east on I-40 and was running 10mph fast. This was in daylight. (Night time limit is 65mph and *strictly* enforced.) I was not passing that many cars and a few were passing me. It was a light traffic time of day and it is easy to stay in the right lane except when necessary to pass slower traffic.

Anyhow, I got pulled over -- I was sick and had forgotten to turn on the V1 -- and I asked for a warning but the trooper said it was required that he give me a ticket going 10mph over. Shoot, he could have cited about a zillion other cars and pickup trucks all running 10mph over (or more) but the Turbo sticks out like a sore thumb.

Anyhow, my advice is you can drive 5mph, 10mph, any number of miles over the limit you your heart desires and your brain thinks is "safe" but you have no real cushion. It is up to the officer's discretion and a speeding Porsche with out of state plates? You're going to get a ticket.

Texas has probation before adjudication and by phone I signed up for this and 6 months later -- with no more tickets anywhere -- and for IIRC $75 fine the ticket was taken care of with no points on my license.

God I love Texas. (Well, except where that Texas state trooper patrols on I-40 a few miles east of Amarillo.)

When it comes to "limit" I use a different rule. +/- 10%. So the amount that I would go over is based on speed and so far, I've had the CHP pass me by even though I was technically over the speed but within limit. Of course that's when I'm cursing to work.

When I drive my Porsche, I have frequent bursts of way over the limit.

I agree with Macster on the out of state Porsche thing. I was running about 15 over on I65 just south of Louisville Ky and was being passed like I was sitting still. But in a black out of state Porsche with the wing up - boom $375 contribution to the lovely state of Ky.
