Default Headlight bulb upgrade and options

I have the halogen headlights, what bulbs can or should be used? Can I change the bulbs to white light without doing a HID retrofit?

What are you guys running?

I use silverstar ultra in my other car and I like them. Bright and white.

Do you have a picture of them? No burning or yellowing of the lens?

Do they last long?

Another vote for the Silverstars. I have not seen any ill effects in my 996 from using them. Definitely an upgrade over stock. Not HID bright but much better.

I added a link to my post above. I don't have photos of them on my other car.
I've never tried them on my 996 (Litronics) but they use the same wattage as the stock halogen bulbs so they should not burn or yellow the lens.

Thanks Ahsai, I saw the link, but I don't really trust the manufacturer's photos

I'll probably give them a try then.

The manufacturer is pretty honest though with the note "*Compared to worn standard halogen" Quite hilarious.

Forget about the numbers they claim. The improvement should be noticeable though. Who knows if it's 30%, 40% brighter...

I don't drive much, and not much at night either. And I rarely drive on roads that aren't lit anyway. I just wanted to get a more updated look with the white lights instead of the yellow

Sylvania Ultra it is.

I have not used Silverstars in my 996 but had poor experience with short life using then in my Audi A6. I now use Philips CrystalVision Ultra. Maybe not as White as the Silverstar but cheaper to buy and last twice as long.

I have the Silverstars, but not the Ultras. I'm very happy with the brightness but I recently added LED daytime running lights that are much whiter. I contacted Sylvania before I bought the Silverstars because people speculated that they might be hotter. They responded that a bulb that puts out more light using the same wattage will actually be cooler because the energy is either released as heat or light. Makes sense. So as long as you don't increase the wattage there should be no problem with the internal lenses.

For what it's worth, I've had the Silverstars for about 2 years with no problems, but I don't do a lot of night driving.

I replaced my worn bulbs with Osram Rallye 65 Watt bulbs. Standard bulbs are 55 Watts and these are noticably brighter. There are no color tricks with these bulbs, just more light. They are not DOT approved though.
