Default Arrived today: K&N 57-7000 Intake

Since (to the best of my knowledge) this is the only intake that actually guarantees an increase in HP, I decided to pick one up. It's a good-looking piece of kit, which doesn't hurt.

The following stock pics show the intake and how it looks installed. I'll do some work with the IR thermometer after install to see how hot the shielding gets and determine if adding insulation would be useful.

K&N sample photo (I'll post mine once I get it installed)

Please note that (a) I'm familiar with MAF fouling, (b) I'm familiar with the known and alleged pitfalls of various intakes, including this one. If you're interested in following this thread to see how I like it and whether there really IS a demonstrable increase in HP (I'll do before and after pulls), please feel free to follow/comment. If you just want to yap about MAF oiling, how intakes are stupid, and/or how Porsche would have included a spiffier intake if it actually mattered because Porsche engineers are effing faultless and every Porsche is perfect when it leaves the factory, please go take your dump in a different thread.

Claimed HP gain is 23.8 HP. I'm not laboring under the misconception that I'll really see an 8% HP bump, but it would be awesome to get, say, 10HP. We'll see. Install coming on July 5 or 6.

K&N's dyno sheet (part of the sales material on Amazon) showing max HP difference @ 5500RPM on a stock 3.6L 996, third-gear pulls.

Since I'm due for my smog check anyway, I'm going to get smogged first...that way I won't need the sticker for 2 years. Thanks for the reminder, though - I'd hate to give the smog ***** a reason.

Yea, I have a friend who failed the visual with his Ingen intake (non Porsche) and all the tech needed was the freaking sticker. Friend called Ingen the next day and got the sticker mailed to him. Put the sticker on and passed the test.

I have one of these sitting in the shed I never put in my C4S, nor my C2. Interested to see your dyno results.

Do yourself a favor and put a scanner or durametric on it to read the MAF values before and after. One of the cheaper ways to know if your engine really needed the extra air or not.

If you're measuring and want to isolate specific mods, a digital manometer is the way to go but often expensive and a more involved setup process.

Or you can just get a before and after dyno.

I'll tinker with my Durametric, but I'll do the pulls as well. I'm not good with "it sounds awesome, so it's worth living in denial about my car actually now being slower..."

I had surging issues particularly at 65-75 mph constant hw speed with cone type intakes(fabspeed) on my old 996. Sounds great at full song but didn't notice much seat of the pants power. Mike

I want the dyno results. I have the G-tech Pro thing I used on my Acura to see the effects of the mods. For $75 (used) I paid for the device it is pretty neat. Calibration and correct installation are really important for accuracy of the results. If you don't position it correctly or don't calibrate the revs right...it goes nuts. On my first run in stock form without adjusting the G-tech, my Acura had 360 HP and did 0-60 in 5 seconds flat.
