Step #4: Start the car up after refitting the engine to see if it works, then stop it immediately and change the oil again.

Step#5: Remove the transmission and clean that.

Wow you guys are way too serious about engine bay cleaning. What, a $1000 to drop the engine for a freaking detail??!!

If you leave it dirty, you're less apt to find/see leaks. I had a cam cover that leaked for years and just finally fixed it. The dirt and grime actually helped seal things up

All seriousness aside, I just cover the intake tube and spray it down with Gunk and a garden hose.

Meh, there is a difference between gaskets getting old and weeping vs leaking.

Personally this isn't a sexy engine to look at in the car, so I don't bother cleaning it and don't give it a second thought. Doesn't make it go faster.
