Stuff like this is my favorite part of cars like this dropping in value. People aren't scared to try new things when they're not $100k cars anymore.

+996. But my fav is still how much peeps obsess and analyze the orange cap mod which is on the other end of the scale. Next up is fabbing up a $800 intake system from a Honduh intake worth $25.

So I had a similar idea... Ever notice how sunlight causes colors to fade over time? that got me thinking, maybe a strong light in the form of a correctly tuned Laser could get rid of the Amber.

There were lots of threads on this back in the day and I seem to recall using a soldering iron very near the plastic to heat it and it easily pulled away. That sounds a lot less caustic than sanding.

Testing out the theory.

If it will respond to heat the better way to apply it more uniformly and accurately would be to grab a wagner heat gun. As for the amber, the entire time I had it till the litronics, every time I admired the front of the 986 I thought of this guy:

"Amerectomy" applies to the clear style headlights, not ambers. Use the search function or google for an explanation.

Interesting. So how do you build up the thickness to original after you "shave" off 1.25mm?

The bulk of the lens is 3mm thick. The turn signal portion is 6mm thick. The removal of material will not adversely affect the strength of the lens.

1.25mm will also be easy to taper into the rest of the lens so that it looks like original.

I get you particlewave. you are talking about taking a thin (the yellow) layer off the lens itself. Its a great idea. I'm really curious as to how it works out. I guess you can use the yellow layer itself as a guide as to how much to take off. Just keep sanding until all the yellow is gone.

If it works you can set up a nice little arbitrage business. Buy Yellow - Sell Clear.

I think you think people care about the amber more than they do.
