Advice for a newbe
Well!! -- I drove a 911 a few weeks ago -- I think it has me!
I drove a cab originally, but I think I want a Coupe - I have been looking and learning!
The option list is like organic chemistry!
Color is still a ? But I think I really like the looks of the C2 - I like the awd of the 4S but I like the purity of the thin body -- I do not even like the optional small side flare that I saw on one.
This is was what I was thinking of -- Full leather Int -- PSM -- Carrera wheels
If I am going to do this I may as well get the: Xenon -- Bose -- and Heated Seats
I am leaning towards the sport seats -- I do not want/need power seats
I like the larger shifter -- so go with the Alu/leather option on that.
It looks like the coupe needs the rear wiper -- I like the looks w/o but I want to see out in the rain.
My cllor choices keep jumping around ALL OVER THE PLACE -- but I keep going back to the thought that if I am going to do this, why not get something different -- I very much like the Lapis blue exterior -- IT would look great with black int and center con in Lapis.
But I think I would love something even more different -- The yellow is very cool!
I keep my cars a long time, they become part of the family -- I have an 88MB SL with only 45K -- That is why I do not want a cab -- also I would think that the coupes are quiet in relation to the cab. I also have an JAG VDP that I ordered and still love 7 years later.
How does the above sound -- This is a car I am going to drive -- I will take trips in it -- it will see bad roads (this is the NE) go into NY/ Philadelphia. Is this a good time to buy -- I would get a used one but it would have to be what I want, and it does scare me a little since I am sure some of these cars take a beating. Also I like the fact that this is late in the production run and the bugs are worked out -- this is a car for me -- not to show off to the guy next door -- I do however want my brothers lower lip to drop when he sees it.
Oh also I noticed someone has listed the following -- comfort package/ advanced technic package/ design package -- were these at one time options -- I do not see them listed.
Thanks any and all - I have enjoyed reading the forum.

Looks like you hit the high points.
When I was originally looking for my 996, someone wisely said. PSM is about the only option you cannot upgrade to later so if you are planning on keeping the car for a while, I would keep this at the top of your option list.
Color is a personal choice. Silver, blk and blue seem to be the most popular. Of those, Silver seems to show the least dirt. Personally, I think the most practical color is white. Why? low maintenance, simple to match if there are any accidents, and its not the most popular ... so you should be able to get a nice discount. I was lined up to buy an 00 wht/blk but my wife hated the color. Buy a white one for me!
Fall seems to be a good time to buy, especially in your area. A few people have noted that the used prices have recently stabilized.
Good luck

I enjoy reading about people who are planning their next (or first) Porsche. I think the 996s offer a great value in today's market, especially for the needs you describe. I also think a C2 coupe is a great idea. It's lighter and I personally think the narrowbodies are sleek looking. I happen to have An Arctic Silver Cab and the color poses no problem for cleaning. If you enjoy top down driving at all I would consider a Cab. The hardtop is easy to attach and store...and offers a very "coupe-like" ride. I even like the profile with the hardtop on. It's just different enough to be unique looking and still have the distinct lines of a Porsche. The other feature I like when the hardtop is on is the fact that the rear side windows retract and offer a more "open" ride than a coupe.
Good luck in your choice....Be sure and let us know what you decide and show us pics

A couple of words on the paint color.
If you are going to be keeping the car for a long time and IF white or yellow is a color you were thinking about then they are good choices as they are the strongest pigments and will last the longest (atleast this is what a car-detailer at the place where I bought my Porsche told me). Also non-metallic is easier to match then metallic when performing touch ups.
Obviously the major consideration should be whether or not you like the color and then if you have multiple colors you like equally, start thinking about paint longetivity, etc.. Personally I really like metallic burgundy as well.

IMHO skip the sport seats, the stock seats offer just as much support and the power lumbar, etc. is nice. Skip the rear wiper, I've heard ( I have a Cab) that it's not needed. Several coupe owners have removed theirs. For colors Speed Yellow will be easier to care for then Lapis Blue - you can get a C4 narrow body in a cab. Don's right about the hardtop.

Another option you need consider is PSE.
It comes with a switch so you can select silenced or sport exhaust.
The packages, Advanced Technic, Comfort, Design, are just a options bunched together for ease of ordering. The exact options for each one eludes me at the moment, which is funny because I actually have all 3 packages. Maybe somebody can list them?

I think the packages change for different MYs. On my MY01:
* Advanced Technic Package - litronic headlights, headlight washers, Becker hi-fi digital sound, remote 6 cd changer, air deflector, onboard computer
* Comfort Package - 10 way adjustable full power seats w/positrol lumbar.

Take your time - learn everything you can b4 you place your order. I drove all over California and Nevada (LA, San Jose, Reno) looking at colors and options that I could not find locally. Also, since you keep your cars, no need to skimp on the options. IMHO, I'd step up to the plate on the interior, full leather (maybe leather to sample), lower dash and carpet in deviated color. Alum or carbon. You can even spec different color seat inserts or stitching.
