Typically the spark plug box will have a recommended turn marking on the box, such as hand tight plus 90 deg.

Another Update: Successfully replaced#1, #2 and #3 plugs and coils, which included the suspect #2 coil. I started up the engine and voila! Check engine light immediately went off and the engine is back to running normally. Looks like the #2 coil was the problem as suspected. I'm just happy the problem wasn't something more serious like a sticking valve.

Thanks for all your help guys. Soon I will swap out the coils/plugs on the other side of the engine but the bad #2 coil issue that caused all of this is solved.

One lesson learned here is that both the Primary and Secondary coils inside the ignition coils can be tested with a multimeter. I've seen very little documentation that shows this.

So I have finished installing all new coils and plugs and (wait for it)... the engine is purring like a kitten. Nice and smooth. I suspect that the five old "good" plugs/coils were working but maybe not optimally.

Mine said "Crank them down until they strip and then back 'em out 1/4 turn??"

Next up the Secondary coil test. From what I can tell, terminal 4 to the spark plug contact point is the Secondary coil. I measured 18k ohms on both the #1 coil and the #3 coil. On the #2 coil I measured an open circuit! Pretty sure I found the problem here. It seems that the secondary coil in #2 is shot.
Resurrecting an old thread. It is interesting that coils can be tested. I haven't seen this until I came across this thread. Can anyone explain which terminals are which on the coil? I'm looking at a Cayenne coil (08 Cayenne S) but imagine they are very similar to the 911 (I have a 997 as well but the present issue is with the Cayenne). The Cayenne coil has 4 pins. I found a link from autozone about testing Kia coils (see link below). If we know which pins are which, we should be able to follow a similar procedure to do the test.

It would be great if sjg1138 could post his procedure. That should be a sticky for every subforum that involves this type of coil so that people are aware of it and don't replace coils unnecessarily.

Best to ask in the Cayenne Forum because the answer does not apply to this Forum. But this may help
