Default Coolant level keeps droping

I've had my car now for 2 month now and have just over 1000 miles on the car.

At 700 miles I noticed that the coolant level was below the Min. Mark. So I topped it up half way between Min and Max. Now about 4 weeks later it's at the Min Mark again.

I looked under the car and inside the engine compartment with a flash light and I can't see any signs of leakage around the hoses or any dryed residue in the engine compartment.

Is this normal? The manual makes no mention of this rate of coolant loss. Seeing that coolant is not consumed like oil is I have a feeling I have a very small leak somewhere.

Any thoughts?

I have the car booked at a service center in a weeks for a roof rattle & a non-functional electirc seat button.

Hi,

That's definitely not normal, there should be no coolant loss whatsoever.

There are a number of reasons why this could be happening, some quite trivial (e.g., cracked coolant container), and some quite serious (e.g., cylinder head). There problem is that you could do some serious damage to your engine, so I'd call up AFN or whoever your dealer is and let them know straight away. Try to talk to a technician and not the friendly lady that books in your car.

Cheers

Talk to your dealer and have them check it out.
It might be a bad coolant res. cap.

You have a leak. Most common are cracked tanks, and leaking caps. There have also been a few cases of leaking hoses or clamps.
Your dealer can pressurize the system and find even minute leaks in just a few minutes.

I had the exact same thing happen with my '02 C2. After I had to add a quart or so of coolant at around 500 miles, it dropped a little to the minimum level and hasn't moved since. I'm now at 3000.

I just had my car in the shop (last week) for this exact problem. the dealer discovered it was a leaky tank. I asked whether this was the first he has seen, his reply "no way". I also had my airbag light repaired for the 3rd time in 2 years.

Where does Porsche fall in the quality rankings?

Actually a couple of weeks ago somebody posted an article on CNN stating that porsche was the most reliable car in the US market. Even higher than Lexus.

My car had the same problem with leaking coolant. It was a cracked tank. Seems like that may be a common issue.

As to the Porsche quality ranking...

Yep. Porche actually ranked #1 as a manufacturer. It ranked #3 in the car rankings (behind Lexus and some American car). Pretty good.

Of course, just after those rankings came out my car developed a cracked coolant tank and a bad ignition switch.
