Default Airbag light question

I know I saw this thread before, but my search has come up with nothing....

I have a 99 996, I put sport seats in the car. In doing so, I made the airbag light come on. I was told by the dealer, this can be easlily reset, but only by the dealer.

I was also told that the airbag is still functional while the light is on, but whenever the circut for the airbag is broken, the light will stay on until reset.

I just need someone with this same experience to verify that for me.

Thanks,

This is all true. If you disconnect the seat belt harness with the key in the ignition, it will turn on the air bag light. The only way to turn it off is with a PST2.

If you didn't have the key in the ignition, you may have done something else to the connection or the ground for the seat belt harness that caused the air bag light to go off. In this case, just resetting it will not solve the problem. You'll need to recheck the connections to fix the problem and then have the light reset.

I'm also interested in this and I too can not seem to search previous posts. I suspect that we can't search threads on the old server ... which is a bummer.

But anyway, the light on my 99-996 came on out of the blue. Can anyone point me to the previous threads on this? .... or fill me in on the history?

Thanks so much!

Pete,

This is a common problem on the 99 996s. It has to do with the design of the seat belt wiring. There is a TSB out on it. You may want to look at Eric's write-up in the 996 FAQ section.

did you disconnect the battery when you did installation?

I have GT3 seats and never had this problem. All they did
was transfer the wiring harness to the new seats. If the battery
was disconnected everything should be all good.

Otherwise, have the dealer reset it should be no problem.
