Default STI Engine swap in 996?

First off I'm purely asking this question hypothetically. Is it possible? Not planning to do it but thru out automotive history people have been swapping out motors in cars. When I was growing up in the 60-70's I saw numerous Jaguar XK120's with Chevrolet 327 running gear. Even a couple of early 60's Aston-Martins doing the same. We're all familiar with LS3 engines swaps in 996's so I was just pondering if anyone knows of anyone who may have tried to drop a Subaru WRX or STI powerplant in the back of their 996. Or even better one of Subaru's flat 6 engines. Displacement in the flat 6 is 3.6 liters and horsepower in the turbocharged 4's is in the same ballpark as the 1999-2004 Porsche 996. Lucas electrics is certainly part of the reason Americans abandoned the British Leyland powerplant in their Jaguars. That coupled with the relatively inexpensive and easy availability of the Chevrolet motor must have made it cheap way to get their British iron back on the road again. Let the flaming begin.

Possible? Sure. Affortable? No.

Any swap into 996 involves loads of custom work and counless hours of labor. If you have AMAZING mechanical skills, you can pull it off in your garage in a month.

If you are paying someone else to do it, the cost/benefit makes no sense. You will have to pay for ALL of the custom work which takes days, pay for all of the parts, and then hours of electornics and tuning adjustments.

It is great fun to read about those swap projects, but in 99% of the cases they are just nightmares. With 911 you add another level of complexity to everything with RR layout.

Jag to GM V8 was a very easy swap as you had a F-R car with large engine bay that could hold a V12.

Considering the subaru flat 4's are complete garabage, idk why you would go through the effort. I mean that out of personal experience. There are many, many other blocks that I would rather swap in than an EJ. For about the same money you can do a 2j or LS swap (Cheaper with the LS) and hvae a much more reliable and potent engine.

To answer your question, sure it is possible. With enough money and engineering you can swap whatever will physically fit.

The real question is, is it worth it? and the simple answer is "No effing way in hell"

If the engine in my car ever **** the bed on me, I would seriously consider swapping a turbo'd VR6 into my car.

Cap, a guy near me has done that in a 993.

Look up teameurotrash on IG or google it. It's camo. He will be at Water By The Bridge this year, and I will let you know if it was properly executed.

It won't work on the 99 6this has been asked a few times before. Go buy yourself a Boxster or 914 if you want to fit the EJ series motor into it relatively pain free with least amount of hacking. There are quite a few floating around.

Turbo VR6 would be so much fun!! I have had a supercharged VR6, and a few other VR6 swap cars and it would be tempting to look into going that route if my motor self destructs...

Brad's 993 is the car that put the idea in my head in the first place!

Here's his build thread for it if you're interested:
