I will have to get new brake pads soon. Will be replacing the rotors also , lucky for me , a front set came with the car.

My question is :
what are my brand choices in the pads?

then I should replace the brake fluid, who knows when it was done last?
What brake fluid or fluids are the best ?

transmission fluid?
For oil Ia m using Amsoil H Perf ARO

The car is a 2001 C4 6spd. new engine (07) with aprox 30k

Looking forward in hearing from you .

PS how do I change my user name?

Brakes all depend on how much performance you want as a trade off to noise and wear.

Redline for brake fluids.

IDK about amsoil and tranny fluid, I am sure it is fine.

Mods would have to change your name.

I am doing this in preparation for a road trip at the end of May.
Plugs ? which are the best for this car ?
There is also a short water hose under, its a short elbow, have the new one . The one on there looks like it has been there for some time, Would I need to get the special cooling fluid from Porsche, to replace what I loose when changing this?

Textar pads will be just fine. There's no need to upgrade to a more aggressive pad unless you're tracking the car.

As far as brake fluid, I alternate between the normal color and the super blue fluids to make it easy to tell when the brakes are sufficiently bled. Since you don't know when it was last changed, change it. Be sure to bleed the clutch in addition to the four corners.

Search the 996 forum for coolant to determine which coolants you can use with your 996. You don't have to use the Porsche stuff.

Plugs: Bosch, Beru

Textar pads if you don't mind brake dust or clean your wheels often. Akebono Euro Ceramics if you like to keep your wheels clean. Mintex Red Box are also a good alternative if you aren't doing heavy driving and dust less than OEM as well but still retains the same cold initial bite.

Sorry 5CHN3LL but the gubment outlawed the SuperBlue fluid recently. Technically, it was always illegal but the gubment recently noticed it and started cracking down since you're not suppose to have blue brake fluid. So only gold sold from now on by ATE legally. I'm sure you can find new old stock floating around though. I suppose you can always add a few drops of dye into the brake fluid to achieve the same thing.

Amsoil, Redline are good boutique choices. Pentosin is more of the official fluid for trannys.

Wow, I can't believe (a) there is a law about the color of brake fluid, and (b) we pay people to enforce it.

Exactly, I wonder if gubment is gonna try to lay down the hammer on other fluids soon too. There goes Royal Purple if it does...

I don't think the fluid in question was blue.

Yeh but something else was.....

Personally I like Motul brake fluid. For the tranny use 75-90. That can be Mobil1 Delvac, Motul or...

For pads Textar is fine.

You can get VW/Audi coolant for use with the Porsche.

I got them from eBay last year, only to find out my local Canadian VW/Audi dealer would have been cheaper by a few bucks.......

Not sure if you have tried Mobil Delvac, but it will make cold shifts very hard. *Motul 300 or factory are better options.

*Motul's Gear 300 75w90 is comprised of synthetic ester base stocks, polyalphaolefin synthetic oil, and specialized additives.
It meets API Group V standards, making it one of the highest quality oils you can put in your gearbox.
It provides better wear resistance than non-synthetic or semi-synthetic blend oils.
Gear 300 forms an unshearable oil film on metallic surfaces that will be maintained even when the gears are not turning through the oil, and contains anti-corrosion additives that help protect the gears and other components within your car's transmission.

I had M1 Delvac and yes I agree, in the cold (40F and lower) the car was difficult shifting but it warmed up quick. When I get the motor and tranny back in the car I'm going Motul. Thanks for the info.
