I purchased my two spare keys from Express Auto Keys in the UK. These keys have the RF ID (transponder) but no remote functions but they will open and start the car. They sent me the cut key by using a picture of my key. You can also get the cut key and put it in the FOB head (with remote) you get from the dealer. Cost for two was around $140, but the exchange rate comes into play.

You need the barcode on the remote key to program the security alarm so I ordered the remote head from Sunset Porsche. That was around $160. I had to pay the dealer around $100 to program keys for the car.

From Sunset: 996RECONTROL, Remote Control Keyhead 1 $159.95

Total cost was around $400 (plus shipping) for two spares keys, a remote key and the Porsche dealer programming.

Below is a picture of the Remote FOB with the barcode but no key inserted. There is a spring loaded lock inside the case that allows you to install a key, easy to do.

OEM replacement keys are bloody expensive. While there are occasionally suppliers who will sell the parts, you will still need a dealer or fairly well set up shop or locksmith to properly code. You can also easily waste money on a key that won't code. So before you work hard to save a little money, do your research.

That is a little steep. I ordered new fob from Suncoast and got the local to reprogram. Are you replacing the entire key(including the blade)

Fob is $160 and $50 for the reprogram. That was for one so if you have 2 then it would at $370. Did ask was reprogramming 2 would cost? Sent from my iPhone using Rennlist

There is no way in hell it takes an hour to program a key. I got lucky and when I bought the 996, a month later the previous owner dropped off the two spares and the dealer sent it for free. BUT I was told the two keys (spare and valet) are worth about $500.

Are you getting a totally new key because of lost key or do you have an existing key you can transfer "the pill"(chip) from? That would save you the $150.

$150 for key blade and/or key head? We need clarification.

$150 for key head and 1 hour of programming seems on par with avg rates. Most transfer over their existing pill(chip) from their old key head if they have it.

Btw, some dealerships have minimum 1 hour labor charge regardless of how long it takes.

Your right, takes about 15 minutes to do but the dealer had a one hour minimum charge. I can see their point, they still had to do the paperwork and that takes time.

I had only one key when I purchased my 997. Wanted second key. Bought key fob and blade from Sun Coast $150 (don't remember). Took first key and blade to locksmith to have blade replicated. Took him about 5 minutes to cut and charged me $30. Then took fob and original key to P-dealer to configure new fob as my second key. P-dealer charged $70. Total cost $200.

Prices from July 2012.

Some dealers will not program a key they did not sell.

That may be the case, but Tyson's Corner Porsche dealership will and give a 10% discount with PCA membership.
