Default Oil filter opinions please

Hey guys-

I just picked up an '01 996 last Sunday. I'd like to change the oil soon so that I can start using my preferred brands, etc.
I ordered the LN oil kit which includes a magnetic drain plug, and spin-on adapter, and a spin-on filter. NAPA Gold. I also bought 12qts of Motul 5-40 8100.

Is anybody running the spin-on adapter? And, if so, what filter are you using? I'm not asking about about oils...I know how that goes.

I've been using Mahle for my other cars...wondering what you guys suggest for spin-ons.

Thanks

You should be fine with any of the recommended brands..Napa Gold (Wix)/K&N/Mobile 1.

Just dont use the recommended drain intervals. Those are set with the larger stock element in mind

Yep...ok. I didn't know Napa Gold was Wix...that's excellent.

Thanks

5K mile oil/filter services have worked for my 02 Boxster. 275K miles on the original engine. Still runs great. (And I've used the stock Porsche filter too so I see no reason to go to some aftermarket filter.)

5K is what LN + Jake Raby recommends as well as Hartech. Only an oil analysis will tell you what your specific interval could be extended to but 5K gives you a big margin of safety

That's great...thanks a lot. I'll just use the Napa/Wix units as they are getting great reviews. Many thanks for the cross-link.

I have the magnetic drain plug from Raby, but still use the OEM cartridge filter, and change my oil once a year or approx. 5k miles.

there is no advantage in using a spin on oil filter, is there?

oem cartridge filter is pretty good and you can see if there is any metal shaving.

+1 Ditto always around 3000 to 4000 miles (summer car in MI). Always rip apart accordion filter and check for metallic bits - will turn over 100k next year with original IMSB.

I'm new to Pcar, so...take this with the proverbial grain...
In my reading up on the car, I see that there are shops who suggest the OEM canister bypass valve can become sloppy and let unfiltered oil bypass back to the tank. Obviously, a completely clogged filter means the owner should be flogged...but a clogged filter can bypass the oil to the tank as well. That's a great safeguard to ensure some type of oiling takes place, rather than not.
Same principle in airliner fuel and oil systems, so it has merit. As for filtration itself...there is some discussion about microns and flow-rate (protons, neutrons, klingons...) Don't know about all that, but a smaller hole is ALWAYS better...IMO. lol

I use canister-type on my M3 and 5 series cars with no complaints, but I'm gonna go with spin-on for the 996.

My info is the oil pressure bypass routes oil back to the pump, not past the filter to the engine. Porsche was rather unconcerned about filter plugging with its stock filters, at least on my car as the oil service interval was 15K miles while the filter service interval was 30K miles.

Really after the 1st oil change the filter doesn't have much work to do.

Unless the engine sheds loads of metal -- which is a failure of some kind some where and not normal engine behavior -- the filter will never get blocked.

Meh ?
The link posted in this thread refers to a Renntech discussion about it...the Moderator went into some detail about it.
I'm new, so I dunno.
