Default Noise?

Hi guys,

So everything I posted in my previous post has been solved. Now I notice that sometimes, for brief moments when I am at idle, there is a slight drone coming behind the left exhaust, or so it sounds to be from the exhaust. Anyone else have this? It is not always there, just for brief seconds, and goes away, then comes back in like a minute for like 4 seconds and goes away again. Any thing to worry about? Since I just purchased the car recently, I am not sure what noise is normal, and what is not.

Well lets put it this way. It's well worth looking into further as that's not normal with these cars.

Really?

It does not appear while driving, or while at traffic light, Just when its idling for about 2 mins, then you can quietly hear it.

If its coming from your exhaust pipes, don't worry about it. It could be a cat converter rattling or a heat shield.

All 911 motors are noisy, they produce a lot of mechanical noises compared to Honda/Toyota six cylinder motors. Don't sweat every noise. Go and listen to the air cooled 911, you would think that car is falling to pieces..but that is how they run.

Stop listening to noises, take a pill from my avatar.

It is probably exhaust system drone. If the car has spent time in areas where snow and ice are common and salt is used on the roads the exhaust system hardware (along with heat shield hardware) can rot and things can get loose and noisy.

Even if the car has not been exposed to snow/ice and salt just age can do it depending upon the climate conditions. 'course, there is always just plain old old age which can have something loose. (My Boxster lost some nuts on the studs that hold the stiffening panel to the rails under the engine. Don't know why. Just spotted some missing one day.)

However, you need to get an expert's opinion and that means let a tech give a listen.

Secondary Air Injection, SAI, cycling. SAI is injects air to heat and light the cats quicker at cold start. Also will cycle when needed to keep cats hot.

It can also sound like an angry vacuum cleaner when the bearings get older.

Little more info

Thanks for that description. I had just recently started hearing the vacuum cleaner on early morning cold start
