Changed tranni fluid....
Hi All,
I bought my 996 a month ago after owning a 1981 and a 1983 911SC. I changed out the engine mounts and the oil to baseline those items. Brake fluid and coolant were done recently at the dealer, compliments of the previous owner. I changed the transmission fluid today. The car has 45K miles on it. I have very detailed records of dealer maintenance going back 3 years....I know the fluid was not changed in the last three years. Bottom line is I cannot believe Porsche recommends changing the fluid at 90K miles. The fluid that came out of my tranni (manual 6 speed) was black and very thin with the odor of old tranni oil. Those of you that have changed it yourself know the smell. Anyway, I will be doing it every 15K miles. I used Delvac 75W90, and yes I have a LSD on my 1999. It was starting to rain as I finished up, so, the only test drive I did was to put in the garage. I will let you guys know if shifting is improved. The tranni was shifting pretty well before, but not perfect.
Anyway, my point to this post was - though most of you already know this - don't go to 90K miles on your tranni fluid....what I pulled out of the car looked awful. I cannot imagine the fluid I drained today being in my tranni for another 45K miles .
Have a great weekend,
Ray

Porsche factory maintenance schedule is ****. It is designed to get the car through the warranty period, that is it.
I did the differential fluid on my tip-tronic 2002 C2, fluid came out black. Completely black. Dealers never changed it.

Oh oh. I've gone 90K miles between tranny fluid changes a couple of times now and the 5-speed in my 02 Boxster works just fine. 273K miles.
The techs tell me that Porsche can spec 90K miles between fluid changes because Porsche knows this does harm the tranny.
But if you want to change it more often that's ok. (I try to change the stuff at 60K miles but a few times I just lost track of the miles.)
Also, the stuff stinks out of the jug. I hate working with transmission fluid and always let the dealer service department handle that nasty stuff.
BTW, while you accuse Porsche of wanting to destroy transmissions with its 90K mile change interval I note you elected to use a non-approved -- last I looked which admittedly has been a while -- tranny lube. One might think you are gunning for your car's tranny too...

Hi Macster,
I do appreciate you and your comments. You give me hope that I can drive this car for a LONG time. You are one of the few good news stories on this forum....

Run a Blackstone UOA on your next drain. Every 40-50,000 miles would bet smart. Every 15,000 seems excessive unless you're tracking it.
My UOA's support this.
