when did you change your clutch?
My 99 has 70k miles and came with limited work history.
Clutch is still strong and disengages 3-4 inches from the full retraction.
Trying to figure out if this is the original clutch.
I'm in Canada and the car is originally from the USA so work history is hard to find.
So do you know at how many miles the first clutch in your 996 was replaced at ?
Any and all responses appreciated.

I have a 99 with 66000 on it. Had it since 44000 miles a couple of year ago. No records of work history came with it. I believe the clutch pedal starts to get real hard to press down when the clutch is nearing its end. I would keep driving and don't worry until that happens. Then verify on the forum what is happening and get more responses. Happy driving and a real nice car you have. Keep the pumpkins.

If your clutch is not slipping, you are fine and don't need to replace it. If you know how to properly drive the manual transmission, you can have the clutch last 200k+ miles. When clutch starts slipping, it is time to replace it.
Just like brakes, clutch is a consumable item. If you ride the clutch, frequent clutch dump starts- your clutch will not last long. If you use your clutch properly and conservatively, your clutch will outlast your left foot.

The 996 clutch disk is very small for the size of the engine and that's why it's a hit and miss how long then last. Just as said above, don't worry until it start slipping or the release beating fails.

Mine, too
My '99 has 71K miles w/original clutch. The secret to long clutch life is to always match engine rpm and transmission speed when shifting.
This is a simple skill for most drivers to develop. But some "don't get it" until they've financed a clutch replacement (or two).

60k about 6 months ago. Heavy pedal and just starting to slip a bit. Now, silky smooth and pulling great. Yes, LNE IMSB and RMS to match the new AOS and Water Pump as well. Now that its "perfect" I am considering a 997!

Mine has 83k and I can feel it slipping. Most noticeable when going on the highway, and you feel a lag whe you press the accelerator hard...almost like a turbo lag. I'll take care of it in the winter and maybe IMSB as well.

Changed it when I bought the car at 30k. Had an RMS leak that needed repair and the clutch released relatively high in the pedal travel. Probably could have gone another 10k.

My original clutch was replaced at 126K miles. It was doing great, then it failed very quickly without much warning.
