Did you ever wonder....

Is that what Hurdi did? It looked to me like he decided to blather about how OP is at fault for his engine grenading, which puts Hurdi about 10 feet on the far side of d!ckish...

When I called the Porsche dealer SM about my 02 Boxster when it was suffering from -- not yet professionally diagnosed -- a failed AOS the SM strongly urged me to not drive the car any. Based on the symptoms he said it sounded like a failed AOS.
He said there is a risk the engine can hydrolock as the AOS subjects the engine to a lot of low pressure which can route a lot of oil vapor to the engine intake and into the cylinders, particularly one maybe two cylinders.
In fact the SM told me of another Boxster owner who had called not too many days before me about his car and it was going through the same symptoms and the SM advised him to avoid using the car. But because the parts would have to be ordered the owner refused and said he bought the car to drive and he was going to drive it.
Well, he drove it and the engine suffered a lock up.
In the case of my car, I had the car towed (flat bedded) to the dealer and the AOS was replaced with no real after effects. 80K to 100K miles later the replacement AOS failed and it was replaced.
With this 2nd failure as soon as it became clear to me the AOS had failed -- smoking from cold start that was heavy and continuous -- I had the car towed to the dealer and had the AOS replaced.
In the case of the 996 the threat to the engine from a failed/failing AOS is possibly from two directions: oil as I covered above but also coolant
IIRC the 996 AOS is fed some coolant. If the failure involves a coolant leak this can route coolant to the engine and into the cylinders and chambers where it can cause a lock up of the engine almost certainly ruining the engine.
The risk is real and based on my experience and what I've gathered about AOS I always advise someone if the AOS is suspected to avoid running the engine and get it flat bedded to a qualified shop and get the diagnosis made and the car fixed.

Is the coolant circulated through the 996 AOS for heating or cooling purposes? If the former, at least for those of us in climates where it's not necessary, I wonder if bypassing the coolant side of the AOS is a possibiliy...
Post from Renntech: "Yes, 996 AOS is partially (TOP portion) heated by cooling water." - and another post later in the same thread mentions "to keep it from freezing."
Anyone who is smarter than I am have an opinion? If this is true, bypassing this coolant loop seems like a potentially good thing for warm-climate 996s...

I don't give a **** about Hurlygirlyman.
I put the details in because that's what happened.
This is another opportunity for an upgrade.
It will be back for next season's club racing.
I'll let you all know what's up when the decisions are made.
