Question 2001 996 Turbo vs 2007 997 C2S

I'm looking at buying another 911
Anybody have thoughts on Reliability,Resale or maintenance issues on either.
The 2001 996 Turbo is one owner with 47k @$45,000
The 2007 997 C2S is 3 owner with 52k @$50,000 with a CPO
Both are very interesting and seem to be a good value.
My wife currently has a 02 996 Targa Tip,engine was replaced on warranty at 3,000 miles due to IMS.
Thanks Much for you input !!

Hrm, you do realize the 997 is an m97 motor? Most folks (not me, but most) would consider the m97 radically inferior to the 9A1 DFI motor which does not appear until 2008 in the Carrera. I note this as you mention the IMS failure in your wife's car. The 07' 997 would still theoretically be susceptible to this failure. I would note as well the prices on the 997s are still in free fall.

The turbo on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. The M64 (Mezger) motor is, well, pretty much legendary. You might want to take one for a spin though. A 996 turbo is decidedly NOT a toy. It's WAAAAAY more juice than most folks need. And yes, more pricey to maintain as well. That said, prices really seem to be bottoming. It's hard to find a running '01 turbo for less than about $35k, which is right about double the price of the equivalent NA machines. Which is exactly what I expect.

Thanks much for this...
In my research I thought in late 2005 Porsche went to a larger bearing on the IMS which is not serviceable but holds up much better. Not sure what the failing rate is with those however the CPO made it a little less risky.
Thanks for the info on the Turbo, are you thinking it's not a daily driver or too much for a weekend trip to the coast? 355hp vs 415hp

The m96/m97 went thru a number of modifications to the IMS bearing. There are now after market products available even for the "non serviceable" IMS. Unfortunately. I've personally never lost a second of sleep over IMS silliness.

A turbo can certainly be a daily whip, just go easy on the big right foot. And for the love of god ... DO NOT HAND THE KEYS TO YOUR KID.

m96/m97 have many failure points other then the IMS. If I didn't all ready own one I would never have bought one so I could never promote anyone to buy one. Go with a .2 997/Cayman/Boxster with the 9A1 motor.

The 996 turbo is a great car. 415 hp but easily upgraded with a flash to a safe 480 hp or more. The engine is rock solid, though it is getting up there in age, so alternator, water pumps, rear spoiler hydraulics, slave cylinder and accumulator are common things to need replacement as well as that some cars have 2nd gear pop out issues.
