Default Market is nuts?

Here's a ridiculously low mileage 2004 cab on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cabri...#ht_688wt_1182

High bid was $49,125 but the reserve was not met so it did not sell. KBB says private party sale in excellent condition would be $47,522.

wow... not quite sure why people would bid so high on this car... low mileage for sure but options are fairly plain.

Price is opinion not fact. Everyone is entitled to his opinion.

Cabs are considered quite worth the premium (well, sometimes) by their first owners. Subsequent owners not so much. Sometimes it is hard for the original owner to accept his car may have depreciated a lot more than he had expected and might have been led to believe.

Well bids are pretty meaningless unless a sale is made and transaction is completed. It is a great cab though. He ought to keep it.

Agreed - but someone was willing to pay $49,125!

The dude gave himself a 911 for his 50th birthday and then proceeded to drive it, on average, 343.77 miles a year. Assuming he paid $80K for it new, it cost him nearly $26 a mile to own. Even if he gets the reserve price (I'm assuming) of $50K, it still cost him $9.70 a mile to own that car.

It boggles my mind that this guy burned $30,000 to drive 350 miles a year an a car that isn't all that exceptional (by this, I mean it's a silver 996 cab, which is the most common 996).

I know that some people love the ownership experience more than the driving experience - but I'm not one of those. It's completely foreign to me...

Maybe he enjoys cleaning it and staring at it. Can't fault him for that.
But yeah I would (and I do) drive my Porsche.

Real low mileage, throws a big red flag up in my eyes. The car may look excellent but it has stood around for years. I would not touch it at any price when there are others out there for much less money with a feasible mileage for the year. I say bollux to him at that price or any price. That's OIMHO however.

There's often a large gulf between what people think their cars are worth and what people are actually willing to pay for them. (Case in point: hilariously optimistic for-sale ads in Excellence) Add to that the difficulty of buyers finding the "right" car and the difficulty of sellers finding the right buyer, and you end up with a ton of market variation.

Anyone else notice the missing hose clamp in this pic? Did they forget this from the factory? I noticed mine was missing after investigating a SAI CEL.

Interesting. I've been getting the SAI CEL code as well. Could it be related?

There were two shill bidders in this auction....they tried to drive bidding close to the reserve and get some newbie to get excited and jump in at the end....prices aren't crazy with water cooled yet.....see 964, 993s for some crazy numbers
