Cat converter is gone, will this work?
I have the dreaded CELL and my indie says it's my cat converter after pulling the codes. I used to have a Mitsi Evo 9 and this was popular when running straight pipes to pass emission test. Will this work as well in my 2003 996 carrera 2? Just a temporrary fix while I save for a new cat converter.

I feel your pain. Recently had the codes pop up and when I check the price for OE cats, I was speechless. Decided to go with the Speed Venture X pipe with high flow cats. Just had it installed today and could not be happier. The sound is smooth as silk and no more idiot lights

Sometimes spak plug extenders on the seconday O2 sensor works too. It takes the sensor out of the exhausr stream just enough that it will fool the OBD that the cat is still ok. Not sure if it works on a 996 bit it does on other cars. They are available at any parts store. Originally they are for engines that burn a lot of oil. It moves the spark plug out of the combustion chamber and reduces the chance of fouling. About $10 for a pack of 2.

Beware that some cat elements do come loose from their housing and cause an obstruction.
I have seen a lot of '02-'04 996's with faulty cats.
This is how it looks like :
