Default 0Excessive Key Fob Battery Drain

Has anyone else had their key fob drain batteries in a week or two?

Mine continues to drain the battery even after the button has been released (between 3 and 7 mA).

I think both my key fobs do this, which is more than a simple fluke.

My last battery lasted less than 1 week.

No.

Try this: Take a new battery and insert it backwards. Plus to minus and minus to plus. Then remove and insert it the correct way round.

Also, be sure a battery button doesn't get pressed and held down when you sit down. I always remove my car keys from my pockets to avoid this.

I think it was an intermittent connection on the PC board. When I pressed a button it would continue to draw current (no LED) until I twisted the PC board, then it would stop.

I resoldered all the surface mount leads on the IC chips, then washed everything in acetone to remove any flux. It seems to be working correctly now - no current draw after the button is pressed.

I will have to check my second set of keys to see if they do the same thing.

The Printed Circuit Board switches may be sticking/bad.

If it is the switch you can replace it.

There is an interesting article in the June 2010 issue of Excellence Magazine entitled: "Fob 4 Less: Fixing a modern Porsche key for less than $3 bucks". The article describes rescuing a dysfunctional key by replacing a couple of small, inexpensive momentary switches. Looks relatively easy to do and since the electronic functions of your key are already messed up you don't have much to lose. I have one non-functional fob, but since the other is working I haven't tried this idea yet. I did call the dealer about a replacment. They offered to solve the problem for $375. If you go the diy route please let folks know how it works out.
The article lists the source for the momentary switch as: www.digikey.com, phone # (800-344-4539). The three switches (this is a reply to a targa owner 3 switch Remote) are normally off (part # CKN9193CT-ND). The web link is:

Not in stock, but I suspect that a sub could be found if needed

However, that could be the problem. So far resoldering seems to have it working, but time will tell.
