Default AC Recharge Question

Hello everyone,

Is there anything super special about recharging the A/C on a '99 911? I've tried to read up on it, but I never see an end result from anyone's posts. Seems like some try to buy the little kit and do it themselves, and some feel like it is a job from a professional.

Should I try the DIY approach with a recharge kit from Autozone or take it to an indy? What should I expect to pay at an indy?

Thanks!

CR

First you need to confirm that a recharge is what is needed, modern systems almost NEVER leak refrigerant.

Before you purchase a recharge kit, take a look at this article reviewing the system and maintenance - may help with your A/C issue:

Let us know what you find - thanks!

There is nothing special about the 996 A/C system (compressor is made by Denso, maker of about half the A/C systems on planet earth.) If the system is not to badly contaminated then bringing it back up to full pressure will certainly help. If to much water vapor has gotten in the system then it needs to be pumped down before refilling. I'd throw a can at it and see if it still holds a charge. An indy should charge no more than $100 for a vacuum recharge and compressor lube. It makes sense to throw a can in to start with though just to see if it holds the charge. If not then at least you know you have bigger troubles.
