New member needs your wisdom
Owning a high performance car is not for the timid....or those trying to look like they're at a higher income level than they are.
The wisdom used to be, if you buy a used performance car, you should have half its value in the bank ready to spend on it for all the stuff that will crop up. Further, you shouldn't race or buy a toy car that's more expensive than what you can roll and walk away from.
Yes....cars have become more reliable. But a genuine performance car simply isn't a Japanese-sewing-machine-transportation-appliance. (Thank heavens.) Porsche's aren't perfect, but they're still relatively economical & reliable. It's remarkable if one doesn't start....rather than being remarkable that it Did start.
I had a Ferrari powered car that you expected to have to rebuild the engine every 20-25,000 miles--if you babied it...possibly every 13-15,000 miles if you were more sporting.
We see quite a different story for most Porsche engines. Will some self-destruct for one reason or another? Yep. Just part of the entertainment. But even a rebuilt 3.8 engine from a top supplier will still cost less than 1-3 years depreciation on a new car.
