Got to change my Rennlist signature today...
From “Currently looking for the right 996” to “1999 C4 Aero, 6 speed, Black”. After lurking here reading this forum almost daily for the past two years, searching the various online ads and two near misses on other cars, I finally pulled the trigger Thursday. 
Pics below. I always loved the look of 5CHN3LL’s car (miss seeing its photo as his avatar). It doesn’t have as nice of wheels as his car, and I’m 95% certain the first thing I’ll do is remove the red tape stripes.
Found it on ebay. Here are the option codes:
288 headlight washer
413 18" turbo look wheels
437 full power seat, left comfort seat left
438 full power seat right, comfort seat right
490 Hi Fi sound system
601 Litronic headlights
699 Radio MDR-32
981 All Leather Lining
XAA Aero kit
Here are the mods:
Bilstein fully adjustable suspension
Schnell pedals
B&M short throw shifter
Fister D mufflers
Fabspeed headers
K&N cold air intake
The PO is packing up all of the OEM parts, except the suspension, and including them in the sale.
Mileage is 135,000, which I realize is very high. But, in the last 1,000 miles, the PO installed a lower mileage engine. He ran over a semi-truck’s tire tread laying in the road which knocked off the oil filter and starved the old engine of oil. He got his insurance company to pay for a replacement engine. The replacement engine has 61,000 miles on it and he was able to drive the donor vehicle before the engine was removed. He sent the engine to European Motorsports in Lawrence, MA, where they replaced the IMS bearing with an upgrade, replaced the RMS, the clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing and replaced all gaskets on the engine. I spoke with European Motorsports and they said they fully checked out the engine as well and it was in good condition. It also got a new set of tires in the last 1,000 miles.
Having it shipped from Boston area to Kansas City ($740). For those of you tracking prices, I paid $18,000 for it. The asking price was $19,500. I figured that with 135,000 miles, the car is about a $15,000 car, and add $3,000 for the lower mile engine, recent maintenance, IMS upgrade, mods and tires.
The seller was familiar with Rennlist, and said he often uses the Pelican Parts forums, so it was nice to deal with a knowledgeable seller. I am amazed at how many sellers I’ve corresponded with knew next to nothing about their cars and the normal issues facing them. I’m really looking forward to seeing the car in person. Thanks to everyone who has shared their knowledge of these cars. If nothing else, I feel certain that I made an educated buy thanks to the Rennlist 996 forum. After selling my 964 about 5 years ago, I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel. I’ve been very reluctant to post here since I didn’t have a 996, so maybe I’ll post a little more often (although as a Rennlister since 2003 with under 80 total posts, I’ve never been a big poster).

Thanks Krazy. Yep, was planning to get rid of the stripes as soon as it arrives. Also read on here that the K&N will cause CEL to come on (don't recall why, just remember reading it somewhere). But, since the OEM parts are included, shouldn't be an issue.

There are many opinions on the K&N but I would trust what Jake has to say about it which is dont use it. The K&N are known for causing problems with other vehicles as well as the 996. I dont think an oiled filter is a good setup for a modern engine but I have used them on many older vehicles.

congrats! Looks like you did your due dilligence throughout the purchase. drive it and enjoy. looks great with the Aero kit. Are you planning on upgrading the wheels? you could you those for a winter set, and look at numerous other 18 ( or 19) inch wheel/tire set ups for summer.

2K3 - I like the current wheels, but what do you guys think about something like this?:
Krazy - Thanks for the tip on the tape stripe removal. Just have to hope it stops snowing here in KC soon.
Sneaky Pete & Dennis - Thanks & have read a lot of your guys posts over the past 2 years. Appreciate the shared wisdom.

Looks like a great car, especially for $18K!
Obviously having the higher miles and replacement engine effect value, it will never be a porschephile collector car, but its hard to imagine having more grins-per-dollar than what you are looking at with the options, condition, and upgrades you have!
The issue with K&N's on many cars is when the filters are over-oiled (and most owners over-oil them), they can 1) Leave oil deposits on the mass air sensors, which then cascades to 2) Inaccurate reading of airflow by the MAF, 3) 02 sensor feedback having to excessively correct the fuel trim, then 4) Check engine light when the fuel trim factor grows past a certain threshold...
The other constant debate with K&N's is wether they let in larger dirt particles than a decent paper filter, especially when under-oiled, which then feeds into owners over-oiling them
