997 trans fit a 996?

The '99 996 has a different trans mount than the later models. So you'll definitely need a new mount for the car.
I assume the bolt pattern is the same for the engine/trans since the engine between the 996.2 and 997.1 is the same (basically).
You will need to figure out if the starter is in the same place (probably is) and if the clutch operation is the same.
My guess is that they are interchangeable, but definitely check the clutch operation.

Yes they're interchangeable. The shift linkage is on the other side (driver's side with the 997). Also the gearing is slightly lower....
