996 Hunt
First post and I have been lurking for a while trying to collect some info. I started looking at older 911s about a month ago and in the spirit of "latest you can afford," I'm looking at the 996s now. I'm currently evaluating a 99 and a couple of 01s. (One of the 01s is a GT3 aero, which I'm partial toward.) This is where I'm conflicted.
All have the 3.4L, and I like the idea of shorter stroke. But from reading some of the threads it looks like the 99 will be a bit lighter and have a bit more mechanical feel. (No drive by wire throttle, etc.) The trade-off on a 99 is they do seem to have been less sorted than the later 3.4Ls. I know proper maintenance is everything, but I'd like to get some expert feedback.
Regards.

I think there are lots of 99 owners on this forum that will vouch for the model year. I have a 99 myself that I bought a couple months ago with 77,400 miles for $17,700. It already had the LN IMS update which gave me peace of mind. I also have maintenance records for the last 6 years. In addition, I had a PPI done and the car passed with flying colors. I think the advice you will get is to make sure to get a PPI and be prepared to walk away if there are too many issues.

Thanks. I have been following that thread, also. It's implied that there are a ton of differences between a 99 and later 3.4L models. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around what really changed between the 3.4L models.

The full leather interiors are very nice, especially compared to the "stock" plastic in the early cars.
That's not silver either - it's seal grey. Also not a bad thing.
When you get down to it - most of them were arctic silver with black interiors (like mine). That's a great combination - but it doesn't exactly stand out.
Seal grey on brick red - pretty cool. And you get the earo kit and sport seats too.
