Isn't that the brake pad wear indicator? I think it might be, although my car also shows a text warning in the display for this.

Mines an 03 but Dennis is exactly right. Porsche calls it the "brake-pad wear warning light".

Gotta change your pads, sensor(s), and the discs might even need to be replaced.

I have the 99 job and my brake wear warning light came on last year and looked nothing like that Ken. Mine used words 'brake wear' to inform me and this light which is just where yours is situated, is to the right of the 'retractable rear spoiler warning light'. I have the 99 owners manual here in front of me now showing me all the warning lights. If this is anything to go off, the 'brake wear' indicator light on mine is directly under the left side of the middle of the cluster and directly in line with the 'dash light dimmer switch' which you see above the cluster. Is yours in this position? If so it could well be a brake sensor light. Now I wonder if the actual brake sensors have been left out of the car when the brake pads where last installed, a trick that the 'trackers' seem to use along with the brake shims for easier pad changing, would this show up on your dash board. I doubt it, hey but anything is worth checking on. Whip a wheel off and see has the brake sensors been left out. You can easily see them on the brake pad. The whole caliper has to be removed the very first time that new pads are changed in the car otherwise there is no way in hell that those pads will come out from the caliper. If the vibration shims are left out of the back of the pads when replacing, then the pads WILL come out again without having to remove the caliper. That may throw an unknown light up as you are seeing. I don't know but worth a check. You wont be able to check that part unless you remove the pad. If you can remove a pad without removing the caliper, Then the vibration shimmy has been left from the back of the pads. Who knows, this may be something else we didn't know about our 996 car. If the brake sensors have been left unconnected then the words 'brake wear' will never show up but just maybe a strange flying saucer like yours might light up. Maybe a 'tracker' might want to chip in here. Good luck anyway KK. I hope you solve it.

the weird thing is that as far as i know all the pads are at least 80% , i had the whole thing apart last year to get the rotor turned , i will look into the sensor , is there a way with the durametric to tell me which one of triggering the light

I believe the sensors all make one complete loop - so if one goes, you get the light.

My light came on saying brake wear but cannot say which brake. I found mine on the rear was worn bad so I did them both on that axle. I had ordered pads all round but still have the front ones on the shelf in the garage as the front ones were still fine. I ordered sensor wires all round and changed those on the rear as well.

Also, they can get plugged with snow or debris and be triggered. Glad yours was an easy fix

Considered reading your owners manual?
