Default 996 key stuck

I went out for a spring drive today and found my car starting ok but the key would not come out of the ignition switch upon shut off. It would move to the right to the accessory position and the start position. It would turn off but not all the way to the left and will not come out of the switch. Suggestions and tips for self repair?
Thanks

I had an Audi A8 that did this once. On mine it was indicative of a very low battery.

Sorry for a non-technical response but you may need to jiggle the steering wheel when you attempt to remove the key. I find mine sometimes is stuck in removing and upon ignition too.

Moving the steering wheel to the left/right hopefully can help you!

Tried all of that thanks now looking for some more technical advice. I am able to accomplish mechanical jobs with clear instruction. Anyone? Trials and Tribulations? Things to know and watch out for?

You can find the DIY to replace your bad ignition switch on renntech.org. The replacement switch costs about $12+/- and the DIY labor is about 30-60 minutes.

Good luck with the fix.

My advice would be to replace the lock housing and the switch. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...y_Code=996keys I did just the switch, figuring the old one lasted 10 years and 75,000 miles, the new one probably would as well. I was wrong. The switch lasted less than a year. I could have tried to get a new switch under the Porsche parts warranty, but I decided to get the whole assembly and just be done with it. Instructions are on renntech http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...or-996boxster/ The hardest part was getting the lock cylinder out. You have to maneuver the paper clip just right to catch the release.

You can not buy just the switch from the Porsche dealer. They will only sell the entire housing as DK570 did but it runs around $250 or so IIRC. You don't need the entire housing at all and can buy the switch only at the Audi dealer for about $65. You'll find the exact same switch when you pull out the old one with the Audi logo and part number! Changing out the switch is much easier than the whole housing but it still requires you to be a contortionist laying on you back sideways between the seat and the firewall. But it's straight forward and doable. I'm a big handed heavy weight and I got it done with minimal swearing and nicks.

Exactly....My key was getting stuck last year. Searched on RL and found the DIY. $12 at the local NAPA store for the ignition switch and about an hour sounds right. The hardest part was contorting myself under the dash.

You can buy just the ignition switch at NAPA for about $14. And yes, you must be very flexible and not at all claustrophobic. I am neither.

Thanks I did some additional reading and a how on the switch. Going to try it first and then the entire mechanism if need be.

I had the same problem on Christmas eve last year. Replaced the switch (the $9 part)...no joy. The entire locking mechanism needed to be replaced, which I opted to have professionally done. My dealer, who did the work, said they keep several of the full mechanisms in stock since they replace them in older cars frequently.

End result...I have two spare switches, and an upgraded ignition lock assembly that should not need replacing again. And a lighter wallet.

Fingers crossed that your switch is the bad actor.
